Another Great Review for The Big Book of Necon (and a shipping update!)
Thanks to our extra helpers in the warehouse, we were able to ship ALL of the domestic preorders for The
Big Book of Necon
trade edition yesterday, and we'll start on the Non-US orders today. There are a lot of orders headed overseas, but we'll be sending them out as quickly as we can. In the meantime, if you still haven't placed your order, you might want to read the newest review for this acclaimed anthology!
"Necon is an annual, rather informal get together for horror professionals and fans, held annually in Rhode Island. The program pamphlets and other materials have contained a number of original stories, poems, essays, artwork, and other material by some of the biggest names in the genre. I’ve seen some of these listed on Ebay for really incredible amounts of money. Now editor Booth has collected all of these and more into this rather large collection of material from such names as Stephen King, Peter Straub, Neil Gaiman, Brian Keene, Jack Ketchum, and many many others, over fifty contributors in all. Most of this material is not available anywhere else and it is all of professional quality. A genuinely rare and unusual as well as entertaining anthology."

In addition, Cemetery Dance magazine has reached another milestone with the publication of the last two issues of our great friend Bob Morrish's tenure as editor. As you've already seen on the

We haven't posted the contents on our website just yet, but if you look to the right, you'll see a small preview of the amazing Les Edwards cover artwork for the issue. And if you subscribe today, you won't have to worry about picking up the issue on your local newsstand when it comes out!
So far, we're off to a great start with our plan to get caught-up on our schedule in 2009, and some of our biggest releases of the year are still to come... including a few surprises (both new announcements and older preorders) that should make a lot of our collectors very, very happy.

Bob Booth and his wife Mary are best known for founding Necon, which,
according to Stephen King, "has been the best horror convention since
its inception—folksy, laid-back, and an all-around good time."
Bob likes to bring people and stories together, and although he has published
both horror fiction and non-fiction relating to the horror genre, his
main contribution to the larger horror community has been behind the scenes.
A "friend to the stars," the number of horror novels in which
he is a character or which have been dedicated to him approaches twenty.
Friend Les Daniels likes to refer to Bob as one of the "nine unknown,"
a shadow government that brokers deals in the horror/dark fantasy community.
Dave Hartwell once referred to Bob as one of the "secret masters
of fantasy."

Moonbane by Al Sarrantonio
Limited Edition In-Stock and Shipping Now!
Cover artwork by Alan M. Clark
Interiors by Keith Minnion
After twenty years, the classic novel of lycanthropy by horror master Al Sarrantonio is back in print, in a beautiful new limited signed edition.
Moonbane asks the simple question: Why do werewolves howl at the Moon?
The answer: Because that's where they originally came from!
A fast-paced horror-thriller in the tradition of Richard Matheson's I am Legend, Moonbane explodes with a riveting opening reminiscent of H.G. Wells's War of the Worlds, and never let's up for a moment.
Moonbane has been hailed as "A great fast read with a super ending." (Rocky Mountain News; also one of their top book choices of the year); "Unabashedly violent...a raw power...that holds the reader's interest until the final pages." (Mystery Scene); "A great evening's read" (Charles de Lint); "A stylish B-movie of a novel. Fast-paced and poetic." (Joe R. Lansdale).
With a new Preface by the author, and with a cover by Alan M. Clark and beautiful interior artwork by Keith Minnion, Moonbane is published here for the first time in hardcover — in an edition that is bound to become a treasured collectible.
Praise and Reviews:
"A novel with real style, informed by a wry and sometimes chilling point
of view. Moonbane is not quite like anything you've read before!"
— Ed
Gorman, author of Rough Cut
"Al Sarrantonio's Moonbane is a stylish B-movie of a novel. Fast paced
and poetic, and scary in the old-fashioned sense of such fine B-chillers as The Cat People and I Walked With a Zombie."
— Joe
R. Lansdale

The Big Book of Necon edited by Robert Booth
Trade Edition at the Printer and Great Reviews Rolling In!
Earlier this month, we decided to send the trade edition of The
Big Book of Necon edited by Bob Booth to the printer, even though the signature sheets for the signed editions weren't ready yet. Those sheets will hopefully be finished next month, and then we'll get the signed editions going to the printer, too. For those of you who ordered the trade edition, we're working hard with our printer to have the unsigned edition ready a little earlier than originally planned!
In other news, Publishers Weekly just ran a great review, and we also have a terrific review from Green Man Review that we definitely wanted to highlight:
"A major horror anthology calls for a 'killer' lineup, and this 30th anniversary tribute to the Northeast Horror and Fantasy Convention features more than 50 works of fiction and nonfiction by past attendees and guests who represent the best and darkest of the genre's practitioners. Among the highlights are Stephen King's "The Old Dude's Ticker," a retelling of Poe's "The Tell-tale Heart" as the rant of a homicidal Vietnam vet, and Peter Straub's "Response from a Surprised but Pleased Recipient," which takes the form of creepy answers to a marketing survey. Essays and illustrations by numerous horror and dark fantasy notables round out the volume. Though mostly not convention-themed, these works easily showcase the impressive array of talents that have helped make Necon an annual highlight for horror's pros and semipros."
— Publishers Weekly
"There are two ways to read The Big Book of NECON, the lovingly crafted tribute to this small New England convention. One is simply as an anthology of short fiction and artwork by those affiliated with the con, whether they be one-time guests or long-time regulars. To read the book this way is to enjoy work by luminaries ranging from Stephen King (with a previously unpublished story) to Gahan Wilson to Neil Gaiman to Jack Ketchum to Peter Straub to Christopher Golden to, well, let's just say there are a lot of names in there. It's also to thumb past a few NECON travelogues and reports from folks like Stanley Wiater, Charles L. Grant, Thomas Monteleone and others, and to completely skip the alternately informative, amusing and terrifying NECON glossary helpfully provided by Douglas E. Winter. Doing so yields an entirely satisfying, highly enjoyable read of some wonderful fiction and poetry, spiced up with art by Wilson, Glen Chadbourne, Jill Bauman and others. Of course, reading the book this way completely misses the point... it's to celebrate the fact that so many people, of such talent, have come together at NECON to have a good time, and to share the joy that has resulted."

"The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly" by Bev Vincent
For the Amazon KINDLE!
Meet eight secondary characters from The Dark Tower series who didn't make it into Bev Vincent's acclaimed The Road to the Dark Tower, the world's most in-depth look into Stephen King's epic series! (This is a supplemental update to Bev's book and does not contain the complete text of The Road to the Dark Tower.)
From Bev Vincent's introduction:
"My contract with NAL (New American Library) for The Road to the Dark Tower stipulated that I would deliver to them a 70,000-word manuscript. Ron Martirano, my editor, said I could probably go as high as 80,000, but my publisher wanted to keep the book from appearing too thick and daunting on the shelf.
Early on, I had an idea I was going to have a hard time keeping it under 100,000 words. What I ultimately submitted ran slightly over 130,000 words, including footnotes and appendices. I fully expected to be told I'd have to cut some -- or a lot -- of material, a process I did not relish.
Fortunately, my editor is as big a fan of the Dark Tower series as I am and he made no mention of the fact that I'd delivered nearly double what my contract specified, concentrating instead on the content.
However, I had already removed some material before I submitted the manuscript. The Dramatis Personae chapter was by far the longest in the book and my first draft featured not only the principle characters but subsidiary characters who either made repeat appearances throughout the series or who I considered pivotal for other reasons.
Rather than reduce the space devoted to the major characters, I decided, after much soul-searching and regret, to delete some of the lesser players. Now, thanks to Cemetery Dance, I have the opportunity to reintroduce readers to eight characters worthy of scrutiny.
Here, then, are the good, the bad, and the ugly."

Elsewhere by William Peter Blatty
Important 1st Edition News & Exciting Announcement!
As you know, the trade hardcover edition of Elsewhere by William Peter Blatty has been shipping for about three weeks now, and thanks to another surge in purchase orders from distributors, we're almost out of 1st Edition copies of the trade hardcover.
As long-time collectors know, it is very rare that we reprint any book -- even trade editions that could be printed for as long as the contract allows -- but as the great reviews for Elsewhere continue to pile up, we're discovering that a lot of people just now realized what they were going to miss out on if they didn't order a copy of this incredible haunted house story by one of our favorite authors.
So today we're officially announcing that we WILL be printing 2nd Edition copies of the Trade Edition of Elsewhere. These will be clearly marked as 2nd Editions so there is no confusion among collectors down the road, and we will start shipping them as soon as the 1st Edition copies are all gone. 1st Editions will go to DIRECT CUSTOMERS first. (And, of course, there won't be any sort of additional Limited Edition copies printed. You're never going to see a "surprise" second printing of a signed Limited Edition from us. That kind of defeats the purpose of doing a signed Limited Edition!)
If you want a 1st Edition of this beautiful trade hardcover, NOW is the time to order! Because we're now seeing signs of customers hoarding copies, we must limit each household to just 5 copies of the 1st Edition.
Click here to place your order today!
In addition, we have a VERY exciting announcement that is somewhat unprecedented! Book of the Month Club will be carrying Elsewhere as an alternate selection for nearly TEN of their Book Clubs this August. We cannot think of the last time a horror small press had a book selected by Book of the Month Club, so this is HUGE news. This selection will expose the book to millions of new readers who don't even know it exists, making those 1st Editions and the signed Limited Edition (which is just waiting on the slipcase and will ship next month) even more valuable!
And finally, if you're a big William Peter Blatty fan like we are, keep watching your inbox for the Cemetery Dance newsletter because we have a surprise project to announce later this summer -- and it's going to sellout VERY quickly once the news gets around!
Important Stephen King's The Dark Tower: The Complete Concordance Update!
Today we received copies of Stephen King's The Dark Tower: The Complete Concordance from our printer and we have to say, this is even bigger than we expected! At over 950 oversized pages in length, it weighs in at at amazing FIVE POUNDS! THE BOOK IS MASSIVE AND VERY BEAUTIFUL -- easily the largest book we've ever published! In fact, our warehouse manager made us very aware that we're going to need to charge extra for shipping on this title once it is in-stock, so make sure you preorder your copy for FREE SHIPPING to US addresses! Now that the books are done at the printer, the slipcases have been started. Our slipcase maker needed a finished book to get the sizing just right, but he's excited about this project and he's rolling right into production.
We've posted photos of the books on our website in case you'd like to see them:

3 New Signed & Traycased Lettered Editions!
Keene, Garton, Hautala, Burke, Sarrantonio, and more!
The Girl on the Glider
by Brian Keene
The Girl on the Glider is Brian Keene's take on the traditional, old-fashioned ghost story. Early glimpses of this exciting new novella lead us to believe this might be Keene's most personal--and powerful--work to date. This book is going to be a must-have for every Keene fan, along with fans of classic horror tales told with a new twist. Keene's signed Limited Editions have been among the most valuable published in the last ten years, so this is an exciting opportunity for any horror collector! (click here to place your order!)
Vespix
by Ray Garton
We're still searching for words to describe this new novella by Ray Garton. We've read the first draft several times now and it's unlike anything he's ever written before. We're certain his fans are going to be stunned by what he's done here because, as always, Garton keeps you on the edge of your seat. He's working on the final draft now and no collection will be complete without a signed Limited Edition copy of Vespix! (click here to place your order!)
The Crane House: A Halloween Story
Featuring Brian Keene, Kealan Patrick Burke, Al Sarrantonio, Rick Hautala, Bev Vincent, Brian Freeman, James A. Moore, James Newman, Ronald Kelly, Norman Prentiss, and Ray Garton
Cemetery Dance has gathered together a group of the genre's most talented authors to attempt the impossible: tell a coherent and scary Halloween round robin story! This experiment was inspired by the hundreds of encouraging emails we received after we published our first round robin, the Signature Series book Looking Glass, which we've since seen sell for over $200 on the second-hand market.
And we have to be honest: having read The Crane House novella several times now, we're still shocked at how well the story came together! You would think the authors had a plan when they started, but no one had any idea where the story was going when Brian Keene first wrote, "Halloween? Big f---ing deal."
Each author brought his own unique voice to this terrifying tale set inside and around Bethany Crane's house, yet together they've crafted a unified story. And now the characters are in there, just waiting for you to join them. In fact, right now Gary, Bodie, Rachel, and the others are approaching the woods near Bethany Crane's house, and although they don't know it yet, they're not alone in the dark... Now that Cemetery Dance #60 has shipped out the door to subscribers (watch for your copy over the next couple of weeks!), we're very pleased to officially announce Cemetery Dance #61, the Peter Straub Special Issue, which is already at the printer. Brian Freeman posted on the Apex blog about this issue the other day and also gave some details about the upcoming special issues, the new columnists, and the changes we're working on right now. Some highlights include:
"Cemetery Dance #61 is going to be our first "Special Issue" for an author in a very long time. Peter Straub is the focus of this issue and he contributed some incredible material: a short story, a long excerpt from his next novel (A Dark Matter, which isn't due out until next year), and an insightful interview.
In addition, Hank Wagner wrote a wonderful essay called "The Peter Principles, Or Nearly Two Dozen Things You Need To Know About Peter Straub" and Bev Vincent contributed a long feature review of A Dark Matter. The stunning cover artwork for the issue is by Alan M. Clark and it represents a key scene in Peter's new novel.
Other fiction in the issue includes "Monsters" by Stewart O’Nan (a beautiful novelette that was originally published as a 226-copy signed Limited Edition chapbook by Lonely Road Books), "The Innocents at the Museum of Antiquities" by Douglas Clegg (part one of an original serial novella), and "Johnny" by Bruce McAllister."
You can read a lot more on the Apex blog and you can view the complete table of contents below!

Elsewhere by William Peter Blatty is HERE!
Trade Edition Shipping Today!
The trade hardcover edition of Elsewhere by William Peter Blatty is now in-stock and shipping to everyone who pre-ordered it! Now is the time to place your order so you don't miss out on one of the most acclaimed stories of the last decade:
"Horror old-timer Blatty (The Exorcist) takes a new route down an old road in this disorienting tale."
— Publishers Weekly
"William Peter Blatty's excellent haunted house/ghost story, Elsewhere, certainly brings into question Stephen King's recent assertion...
that the traditional ghost story is dead."
— Michael Revel Reviews
"Innovatively constructed and skillfully written, the short novel is witty,
scary, touching and thought-provoking."
— Chicago Tribune
"...a witty ghost story of Jamesian complexity."
— The Boston Herald
"...may be the first truly original haunted house story in decades."
— Denver Rocky Mountain News
"...an eerie new novel by William Peter Blatty."
— Library Journal
"William Peter Blatty, author of The Exorcist, returns to the horror genre with a story that is more subtle than that classic novel, but by no means less powerful."
— Tim Janson, Mania.com
"Blatty proves that a good haunted house story can still be written. Elsewhere is haunting and genuinely eerie."
— Peter David Schwotzer, Famous Monsters of Filmland
"Possession is the indisputable peanut butter to William Peter Blatty’s chocolate. The writer who gave us the landmark The Exorcist returns with Elsewhere, a short work from Cemetery Dance that represents his first novel since 1996."
— Rod Lott, Bookgasm.com
"William Peter Blatty's novella Elsewhere proves that the man who terrified
us with The Exorcist still has the power to captivate and to scare
the reader."
— Denise Dumars in Mania
"In many ways this excellent haunted house tale is a psychological suspense thriller as much of the story line (except for the climax) follows the quartet as the house coaxes them to reveal their secrets... Fans of Blatty will welcome his fresh approach of psychological paranormal paradigm twist to the haunted house horror sub-genre."
— Alternative Worlds
"...the author of one of history's most popular horror novels, subsequent made into a blockbuster film, The Exorcist, is back to scare you all over again with Elsewhere, a chilling haunted house tale... Disturbing full-page interior illustrations leap out at the reader like bogeymen, and the evocative cover photograph by award-winning photographer Bruce Haley exudes a sense of the dread awaiting the reader within."
— J. L. Comeau, Count Gore De Vol's Tomb of Dark Delights

One More New Kindle eBook Experiment!
"The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly" by Bev Vincent
We had a lot of people ask if we'd consider reprinting our old chapbooks for the Kindle, and while that isn't in the plans right now, we did receive so many requests for The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly: 8 Secondary Characters from The Dark Tower Series by Bev Vincent that we decided to go ahead and get it formatted and listed right now!
About the eBook:

THREE More Great Reviews For Shivers V
The great reviews for Shivers V edited by Richard Chizmar just keep on coming! If you haven't ordered your copy yet, now is the time!
"Boasting stories from a wide range of big names (Stewart O'Nan, among others), rising stars (Stoker-winner Sarah Langan, Nick Mamatas) and old favorites (Rick Hautala, John Skipp, and more), and edited by Cemetery Dance head honcho Richard Chizmar, one would expect great things from the collection... On the whole, the book is a worthwhile read, and there's more than enough in here to keep horror fans of various tastes satisfied... For an anthology with this diverse a base and author list, that's a real win."
— Richard Dansky, Green Man Review
"Shivers, edited by Richard Chizmar, now at its fifth installment, is a fortunate, consistently good series offering, at (ir)regular intervals, a tour of what the current horror scene produces, in terms of short stories, from both sides of the ocean. "
— Mario Guslandi, The Agony Column
"John Skipp and Cody Goodfellow team up for “Hazel (Reduxed),” a brief tale involving the torture of someone with Alzheimer’s. With its slightly experimental structure and fill-in-the-holes situation, one wishes for a tad more lucidity. Its fever-dream machinations are put to better use in Brian Freeman’s “One More Day,” with children at the mercy of horrific, repeated punishment from someone called “the Big Man.” The collection really picks up steam in the middle, starting with “Dog Days,” an odd love triangle — or make that quadrangle — between two doctors, the woman they both love, and one of the docs’ canine companion. Graham Masterton’s twists here are more unexpected and demented than any novel of his I’ve read."
— Rod Lott, Bookgasm.com

Special eBook for Earth Day:
"Cages" by Ed Gorman
Hi Folks!
To say the feedback from our customers about our Kindle experiment was overwhelmingly positive would be an understatement. In fact, we heard from so many happy customers that we decided to quickly put together another eBook to celebrate Earth Day. (Think of it as a "Save a Tree, Read an eBook" promotion!)
"Cages" by Ed Gorman originally appeared in The Earth Strikes Back edited by Richard Chizmar, and we're pleased to be bringing this story back to the masses in electronic form.
About the Story:
This classic Ed Gorman short story is a terrifying look into a possible future that might just be right around the corner. It's a bleak tale and should not be read by those with sensitive tastes. As the author notes, "I submitted it to an editor I really admire and she really liked it and battled for months with the publisher to let her run it. But he said, 'This story will cost us subscribers.' And you know, I think he was probably right." Cemetery Dance Publications is very pleased to be making this gritty tale available again to the masses.

Big Updates on The Cage by Brian Keene
PLUS: LOW STOCK ALERT!
Today we have BIG news on the The Cage by Brian Keene!
This morning we received the final manuscript from Brian and it's every bit as chilling and thrilling as we expected from the earlier drafts. The manuscript is headed to our best copyeditor and then it'll be rushed to the designer. After two rounds of proofreading, plus Brian's approval of the final design, we'll have it ready for the printer.
We're doing everything we can to speed this title through the process. Keith Minnion started working on the interior artwork using a rough draft of the manuscript, and today we want to show off one of the pieces he already turned in on the product page. There's a small version to the right, but be sure to visit The Cage page to really see all of the detail.
Copies of this title are running very low, and we're now right on track to publish the book later this year (along with 3 other surprise additions to the Novella Series that haven't been announced yet) so now is the time to place your order!

Another Great Review For Shivers V
Booklist will be reviewing Shivers V edited by Richard Chizmar in an upcoming issue, and they've given us a sneak peek. But beware, there may be some SPOILERS in here! We'll bold the key points below in case you don't want to risk reading the full review:
"As the editor of horror fiction’s flagship periodical, Cemetery Dance, Chizmar has developed such a keen eye for talent that each new Shivers anthology is an event worth celebrating. As in previous editions, Chizmar avoids a single-theme approach in favor of casting the widest possible net over the genre’s many thematic and stylistic offerings. The best of the bunch here take common fantasy and horror motifs and morph them into fascinating new variations. For David Lynch-style horror, there’s Norman Prentiss’ “The Albright Sextuplets,” recounting a deliveryman’s discovery of a monstrously deformed baby hidden from the limelight in a celebrity sextuplet family. For edge-of-the-seat suspense, there’s Robert Morrish’s “Each Step I Take Is in Darkness,” about a spelunker’s encounter with the malevolent creatures inhabiting a Mexican cave. Scott Nicholson’s darkly humorous “Good Fences” puts two neighbors’ feud over fences into the category of subtle murder mystery. The volume’s 24 entries also include poetry, fractured fairy tales, and a serial killer’s reminiscences. Once again, Shivers serves as a showcase for the horror genre’s best craftsmen."

New Review for British Invasion
"The title of INVASION suggests a new or recent influx of Brits, where in reality, as Stephen Volk notes in his introduction, they were there first. The UK invented horror. Witness Mary Shelley, Bram Stoker, H.G. Wells, Robert Louis Stevenson, M.R. James and so on — British one and all. This collection focuses on the current crop, however, and while its member may not achieve the heights of their forefathers, there’s no mistaking there’s talent here... In my opinion, the best story is right up front, with Gord Rollo’s 'Lost in a Field of Paper Flowers,' in which a teenage boy is abused so roughly by his father that it puts him in a coma. With the help of someone the kid meets in his catatonic state, revenge on not-so-dear old Dad is rightly achieved, in a twist end that chills."

Three James A. Moore eBooks On Amazon's KINDLE!
Hi Folks!
Ever since we sent a note to our Stephen King customers to alert them to Stephen King's new novella UR on the Amazon Kindle, we've had a lot of customers asking if WE could offer something for them to read on their Kindle (or iPhone or iPod Touch, which can now view the Kindle files).
After much discussion, we went to one of our favorite authors, James A. Moore, with an idea: releasing his two recent (and out of print) Cemetery Dance short story eBooks and his full-length novel Harvest Moon on the Kindle, just to see how readers responded.
Jim was very enthusiastic about trying something new, so today we're pleased to announce you can purchase "Home For the Holidays" and "The Walker Place" and Harvest Moon by James A. Moore for your Kindle, iPhone, or iPod Touch! Amazon is even discounting all three of these eBooks by 20%, although we don't know how long that offer is going to last since we have no control over their promotional discount. Click on the appropriate cover below to visit the Amazon purchase page for each of these titles:
These are not available through any other website, and as we said, this is just an experiment to test the Kindle market. We have no plans at this time to release any other eBooks at this time, but we welcome feedback from our customers and collectors on their experience with these three eBooks and their thoughts on future releases. Please feel free to send your comments to Brian Freeman: brianfreeman@cemeterydance.com
And as always, thanks for your continuing support!will alter the course of the novel, setting in motion a series of astonishing, ultimately catastrophic events.
Mister Slaughter is at once a classic portrait of an archetypal serial killer and an exquisitely detailed account of a fledgling nation still in the process of inventing itself. Suspenseful, illuminating, never less than compulsively readable, it is, by any measure, an extraordinary achievement, the largest accomplishment to date from one of our most gifted--and necessary--writers.
The Subterranean Press edition of Mister Slaughter is the only version currently under contract.

Booklist and The Green Man Review on
Midnight Grinding & Other Twilight Terrors
by Ronald Kelly
"Every seasoned horror fan is familiar with the genre's stylistic extremes, from cerebral suspense to in-your-face mayhem. With several novels featuring demons, werewolves, and plenty of gore to his credit, Kelly has proven himself a stalwart disciple of the latter category. In his first collection of stories, the titles 'Blood Suede Shoes,' and 'Depravity Road' introduce gruesome tales about serial killers, flesh-eating caterpillars, and snakelike newborn children. Since Kelly's specialty is 'southern-fried' horror, many of the tales take place in and around Kentucky and Tennessee, amid swamplands and tobacco farms. An entomologist tours a remote bayou, becoming entangled in the web of a giant, flesh-eating spider. A corn-shucking ceremony in the rural South turns deadly for a young farmer who kisses the wrong dance partner. The dystopian 'Bookmarks' describes a future America run by a Bible belt fundamentalist preacher, in which a horror writer (Kelly's alter ego, no doubt) is imprisoned for his novels. Kelly's flair for imaginatively macabre scenarios yields a juicy compendium of nightmare-inducing gems."
— Booklist
"Ronald Kelly is a storyteller, plain and simple, and with Midnight Grinding, he proves that plain and simple is just plain old good. Here's hoping that he jumps back in to writing horror fiction with both feet. He'll need to, once horror fans get a sample of his work and start clamoring for more."

This Cemetery Dance Publications special edition is a World's First and there are no other editions planned at this time, so place your order today if you don't want to miss out!
About the Book:
Tales of horror and the fantastic have been told in many ways over the centuries -- around the campfire, in books and movies, and even on television -- but no form is quite so visceral and direct as the script.
Whether it's a stage play, a feature film screenplay, or the script for a classic horror comic, these fourteen acclaimed authors aren't just putting black text on a white page. The writing may seem clean and simple at first, but the authors are actually creating worlds; they're luring you into their creations and before you know it, there's no way out. You're part of the story and you have to keep turning the pages until you reach "The End" or "Fade Out." The big question is: will you survive to see the final curtain call?
Come now, take your seat, and let the show begin. You have nothing to fear but your own imagination.

Shivers 5 reviewed by Publishers Weekly!
Publishers Weekly reports in their current issue:
"Chizmar's fifth Shivers compilation, the best to date, features 24 stories and poems notable for their thematic breadth. In Steve Vernon's lyrical "The Forever Long Snake of Olan Walker," a superbly creepy period gothic, an imprisoned conjure man gets his nasty revenge
against an Alabama chain-gang
work farm boss. Dark suspense offerings
range from Sarah Langan's gritty and
gruesome "The Burn Victim" to Scott
Nicholson's wryly macabre "Good Fences."
Other standouts include a fractured
fairy tale from Al Sarrantonio ("The
Cookie Man"), a dark riff on Dickens
from Chet Williamson ("Marley's Cat")
and a disturbing look into a murderously
unhinged mind by Stewart O'Nan
("Summer of '77"). The variety of the
contents ensures that there is something
for every horror lover, and for the most
part these tales deliver the shivers they
promise."

New Reviews of Elsewhere by William Peter Blatty!
Two more great reviews for Elsewhere by William Peter Blatty have arrived!
Tim Janson of Mania.com writes:
"William Peter Blatty, author of “The Exorcist”, returns to the horror genre with a story that is more subtle than that classic novel, but by no means less powerful. This is a story in the vein of Shirley Jackson’s “The Haunting” or Richard Matheson’s “Hell House” in that the horror and atmosphere build slowly as psychological stress builds upon the inhabitants... It’s a classic haunted house mood with strange sounds and apparitions. Blatty is so skillful at working his spell upon the characters that you are not sure whether they are really seeing and hearing ghosts, or if their sanity is breaking down... Blatty throws numerous curveballs at the reader and saves his best pitch for the book’s shocking climax that every good horror book should have. A quick read but one that is perfect for a dark and stormy night…or a bright sunny day, whichever you prefer!"
J.L. Comeau of Count Gore De Vol's Tomb of Dark Delights writes:
"...the author of one of history's most popular horror novels, subsequent made into a blockbuster film, The Exorcist, is back to scare you all over again with Elsewhere, a chilling haunted house tale... Dark humor suffuses this tale of terror and misdirection where the only thing that can be believed is that 'Dead people lie. They're just people'. Disturbing full-page interior illustrations leap out at the reader like bogeymen, and the evocative cover photograph by award-winning photographer Bruce Haley exudes a sense of the dread awaiting the reader within."

Reviews & Praise:
"This bare-bones collection of 18 reprints, spanning 40 years of World
Fantasy Award–winner Etchison's career, delves deep into personal terrors.
Starting off with "Sitting in the Corner, Whimpering Quietly," a
stark account of an unpleasant encounter in a Laundromat, Etchison uses quick
strokes of prose, at times overly sparse, to paint eerie scenes of sharp violence
and deep unease. There are moments when a controlled burst of staccato sentences
serves the story perfectly, as in "The Walking Man," where desultory
bar chitchat takes an abrupt turn for the macabre. Etchison writes a loudmouthed
salesman in "The Pitch" as easily as a lost little girl in "Call
Home," though at times his desire to focus only on the moment can loosen
his grasp on the individual settings he wants to create. The title story caps
off the collection with a brutally exquisite showing of what Etchison does best:
creating a tone and wielding it like an edged weapon."

"They're All Writers (And You Can
Too)"
by Hank Wagner
When CD approached me about doing this piece on how-to writing books, I first
asked, "Why?" Their response was "Why not? We'll pay you." After the quick dismissal
of all that philosophical baggage, I then asked, "Are you sure you want someone
who doesn't write fiction?" Again, they soothed me: "That's exactly what we
want, just do a survey, and throw in a bit of opinion, and viola!" So, first
understand that fact: I don't write fiction, I write about fiction, and
so read this type of book primarily for biographical info on the writers I enjoy,
and then to see what I can learn about writing that might inform my reviews
and interviews (ok, and maybe a little to see if I could actually do it some
day, a temptation I've so far happily resisted—like Helen Holm of The World
According to Garp, I seem to be a reader by inclination). That said, here
comes the first pronouncement. It is my firmly held belief that:
YOU CAN'T LEARN TO WRITE BY READING A HOW-TO BOOK ON WRITING, YOU CAN ONLY LEARN WAYS TO IMPROVE YOUR WRITING.
That's the skinny, the unvarnished truth. Any published writer worth his or her salt will confirm this: it's like diet pills, or get-rich-quick schemes, or playing Beethoven to your baby to insure he becomes a genius, and all that other mystical, magical, pseudo-scientific hogwash that we all instinctually long to believe in: nothing comes for free, especially publishable prose. Most agree that becoming a proficient writer comes only through hard work, determination, and, perhaps most important of all, persistence. No magic wands, no magic bullets, just good old, mundane, endurance.
So, how do you become a better writer?

Stephen King: The Non-Fiction is the first significant review of King's
Non-Fiction. Most fans and readers know King has written three non-fiction books
and may have
noticed his introductions and Author's Notes to his own works,
but few know of his hundreds of columns, articles, book reviews and criticism.
In fact, the Authors review over 560 published works of non-fiction (more
than a dozen are revealed here for the first time) and a further nine unpublished
non-fiction pieces. Full details of these unpublished pieces are revealed for
the first time.
Stephen King: The Non-Fiction fills all the gaps, providing
significant detail on each of the most significant of these non-fiction works,
and a review of every other piece!
In addition, Stephen King granted permission for "My
Little Serrated Security Blanket" to appear in FULL in this already collectible volume! It's a very rare essay
King wrote over a decade ago, and most fans have never had a chance to
read it... until now!
Authors Rocky Wood and Justin Brooks spent five years compiling this outstanding reference work, with the assistance of many of the leading King researchers, collectors and 'super-collectors'; and access to Restricted Non-Fiction Works in King's papers at the University of Maine, Orono.
Stephen King: The Non-Fiction reveals for the first time dozens
of pieces of non-fiction and their appearances that were previously unknown
to King researchers.
If you've ever wanted to know more about King's amazing and often controversial
non-fiction, this is the reference work you must have. This is the ultimate
volume to accompany Stephen
King: Uncollected, Unpublished -- and this is the perfect companion
in your collection for The
Stephen King Universe and The
Road to the Dark Tower.
Among new pieces reviewed in the book are:
* Two previously unknown King pieces from his high school days - sports reporting
in the Lisbon Enterprise (these are not the articles King describes
in On Writing); and a King non-fiction piece from his high school newspaper The Drum; along with the fascinating story of their rediscovery by the
authors
* A 1967 column supporting the US troops in Vietnam
* Previously unknown pieces from The Maine Campus, such as a review of the Spring 1969 issue of Ubris (in which King published the first version of Night Surf, the precursor to The Stand); an amazing movie review; and letters to the editor (many highly amusing)
* Nine unpublished pieces of non-fiction reviewed in detail, including pieces held in the Restricted Boxes of King's papers at the University of Maine - for the first time anywhere the authors describe these works in detail
* A large number of previously unknown letters to the editor
* Introductions to the work of other authors; and book reviews published in unusual venues
* Comprehensive reviews of King's non-fiction in the Bangor Daily News and other Maine newspapers, some of it controversial
* King's early baseball writing, most published in Maine newspapers
* Working from the original sources Wood and Brooks also identified and corrected
numerous errors in the previous reporting of material - incorrect titles, dates,
pagination and even publication information
Stephen King: The Non-Fiction is going to be a must-have for every
Stephen King collector, and we expect it to sell very quickly! Don't miss your chance to grab a copy at the regular retail price!

Mr.
Darkness
by Douglas Clegg
Update and Free Excerpt!
Douglas Clegg is hard at work on Mr. Darkness, his sold out entry in the Cemetery Dance Signature Series, and this week he sent us an updated description and the first excerpt from the opening of the book:
About the Book:
Mina and her brother Leo live with their ailing father beneath the Excelsior Hotel on Sixth Avenue in Manhattan, down in a bunker near the subway tunnels. To survive, they rob from the rich and give to the poor -- themselves. One winter's day, on a foray through the subway platforms to find a "Sherwood" for their Robin Hood game, Mina meets the mysterious man she calls Mr. Darkness.
He lives far beneath Manhattan's subway, in an area of absolute wonder -- and terror -- called Deep City. And she finds herself drawn to him, and to the well-like entrance of a forbidden underworld populated by creatures unseen in the light.
Free Excerpt:
Chapter One
1
Youth is a cliff. You leap, and repair the broken bones later.
When you're older, you draw the map, retrace the steps, and find the cliff's edge again and wonder: would anyone ever jump if they knew how far down it went?
2
Ask Haversham about cliffs and broken bones.
If she could talk, she'd tell you all. I bet she knows the Throat of Manhattan -- that cavernous well that drops to the pitch black boulevards of Deep City. I bet she knows the inhabitants of the lightless world -- who exist below the squalid tunnels of the city -- those people who are less than human (some say) because they've lived for generations in the dark.
There she is now -- see her? Sitting in her wheelchair, far from the subway platform, half in shadow, half in light. Old beyond years. Shriveled. Her eyes, clouded. Her lips curled slightly in an unintended snarl.
What does she think when she watches that girl -- does she remember being young?
Haversham is all white hair and translucent wrinkled skin; her hands, scored with the lines and veins of old age; she makes strange movements with her hands when the arthritis doesn't knot them up as if they're snakes wriggling in mid-air.
In her lap, the little gray cardboard shoe box, its lid tied down with twine.
But who is she, really? -- when the lights go out and her whisper is against your cheek. Do you smell her sour milk breath? Do you feel her curled hand reaching toward you as if she wants you to listen?
Do you really want to know what's inside that plain shoebox, what secret she's keeping? Does it hold photos of her youth -- or wads of dollar bills -- or even the brown shoes she once went dancing in when she could walk?
Haversham, with her little knit blanket and flower-print dress and scrawny bird-head and the way she tries to speak, but can't seem to form the words she wants to say -- almost as if she doesn't know language anymore.
And if she could speak -- will you stop to listen?
3
My name is Mina, and my brother's name is Leo. Leo mostly raised me -- even though he's just a year older than me, he managed to be cook, thief, nurse and even my protector. Our father could do none of this.
Our father is Howard and he's blind and prone to fevers and muscle pains. Our mother -- Marguerite -- died when I was young.
In those days, we lived under Sixth Avenue in Manhattan, but not so far down that we are in Deep City. That's important to know, because it means we're still above the darkest part of the underworld that opens beneath Macy's and Saks and Bloomingdales and, yes, even the Excelsior Hotel off of Sixth Avenue.
We fell through some cracks, once upon a time. My father feels we jumped, but I think we were shoved.
Under the Dome
the epic new novel by Stephen King!
1,100+ Pages In Hardcover
As our newsletter subscribers already know, Scribner has added the new Stephen King novel, Under the Dome, to their 2009 publication list, and we've just received the sales copy for this huge new novel:
"On an entirely normal, beautiful fall day in Chester’s Mills, Maine, the town is inexplicably and suddenly sealed off from the rest of the world by an invisible force field. Planes crash into it and fall from the sky in flaming wreckage, a gardener’s hand is severed as 'the dome' comes down on it, people running errands in the neighboring town are divided from their families, and cars explode on impact. No one can fathom what this barrier is, where it came from, and when—or if—it will go away.
Dale Barbara, Iraq vet and now a short-order cook, finds himself teamed with a few intrepid citizens—town newspaper owner Julia Shumway, a physician’s assistant at the hospital, a select-woman, and three brave kids. Against them stands Big Jim Rennie, a politician who will stop at nothing—even murder—to hold the reins of power, and his son, who is keeping a horrible secret in a dark pantry. But their main adversary is the Dome itself. Because time isn't just short. It's running out."
Obviously this is going to be the kind of epic King novel we haven't seen in a long time, so use the link below to place your preorder today!

The Cage by Brian Keene
Designed Cover Art and Production Update
We've just received word from Brian Keene that he's making good progress on The Cage, but there are some elements in the second half he wants to work on some more. Personally, we'd rather he take his time and turn in the novella as he envisions it instead of rushing to meet a deadline, so we told him to take his time.
We know some fans will be disappointed that the book will take a while longer, but it won't be too much longer until we have the manuscript and we think the readers will agree it was worth the wait. What we've already read is some of Brian's best writing and storytelling to date -- people are going to be talking about this one for years to come!
In addition, Keith Minnion is already hard at work on the interior artwork and the plan is to have that artwork ready for the book's designer as soon as the manuscript is finished.
Finally, Gail Cross has turned in her design for the front cover, which you can see to the right.
In case your new to the list, here's some additional information about the book:

F. Paul Wilson Discusses "The Care and Feeding of a Style Sheet"
Every now and then we post essays filled with advice and tips on the topics of writing and the publishing business. Today F. Paul Wilson discusses "The Care and Feeding of a Style Sheet" in the latest update to the Writers' Corner.
Here's a small excerpt from his essay:
"I think it started back in the mid 80s with Barry Malzberg's The Engines of the Night. As I read through the essays, I noticed a paucity of commas—conspicuous by their absence from introductory clauses and elsewhere in the text. Since Barry was (and is) more conscious than most about style, I figured they were MIA by design. So I paid attention and realized I didn't miss them. In fact, the prose flowed more swiftly and surely than it might have with them in place.
Hmmm.
So I began dropping certain commas in my fiction, experimenting with short stories first, then with a novel. I forget which book it was—Black Wind, perhaps—but I remember receiving the copyedited ms and discovering that the editor had added back all the commas I'd left out. Ack. I think it might have been Black Wind because I remember referring to the editor as a commakaze (sorry, but it’s true). So I had to go through the entire ms and remove those commas."

VERY Important In Laymon's Terms Update:
140 Pages of Top Secret Richard Laymon Rarities and Fan Favorites Announced!
Today we have several VERY important updates for every Richard Laymon fan and collector.
First, we've received Kelly Laymon's introduction ("Out with a Bang: Bare Feet and Bloody Gunshot Wounds") for In Laymon's Terms and it's every bit as touching and funny as you would expect. We don't want to ruin the surprise, but this introduction is a fitting way to start this very special volume. The piece is being copyedited right now and the designer will add it to the book next week. After that, we're going to give everything one last proofread, just to be safe, and then the book will go to the printer in the very next available slot.
In other In Laymon's Terms news, we have some Top Secret information we're finally going to divulge after years of keeping it quiet. We worked with Ann Laymon on a special "mini-collection" of Richard Laymon material to include right in the middle of In Laymon's Terms to make this anthology an even better gift for his fans and collectors. Not just one story or an essay, but nearly 140 pages of rare Laymon material and fan favorites! This section was going to be a "surprise addition" to the book for readers to discover when their copy arrived later this year, but since a lot of fans have been asking, we decided we should officially announce the inclusion of this material now to prevent any confusion.
Here's how this special section came together:
With Ann's permission, we selected several pieces that Laymon fans are always asking us about while Ann went through her files and found some extremely rare writings that most Laymon fans have never heard of, let alone read. This includes material from Laymon's college days, early short story sales, and even a small 'zine that he wrote, edited, and self-published out of his home in the early 1970s. In addition, Ann personally selected 17 pages of photos from the family's private photo albums to show a different side of our favorite author.
Here is the content list of this special addition to In Laymon's Terms, and again, please keep in mind that you're already receiving this if you preordered the book -- you don't have to do anything else or place a new order.
Rarities And Fan Favorites:
* Dick's College Poems (1960s) -- scanned and printed exactly as he typed them, including some handwritten corrections
* "Desert Pickup" by Richard Laymon (1970) -- his first professional sale

NP: I’ve been writing since fifth or sixth grade, but have had a lot of “career changes” along the way. My kid stuff was horror (in chapters with cliffhangers, like movie serials), and I wrote EC and Creepy-inspired stories into college, where I attempted some realistic fiction (a passing phase, I guess!). After college I had a long detour into academia, with a few published essays on the gothic novel and Thomas Hardy; then a shift into poetry, often with a darkly humorous tone. The real turning point for me was the first Horrorfind convention in 2001. There was a free copy of Cemetery Dance issue 35 in the goodie bag, and a CD hardback of Laymon’s The Traveling Vampire Show—that was definitely the most life-changing set of freebies I’ve every received! Plus, the convention had tons of readings and panels by great authors, and I thought, this is the writing I’ve wanted to do since I was a kid—why not go back to it?
CD: What can you tell us about your new role with Cemetery Dance magazine?
NP: I’ve been the first reader for most of the fiction submissions for about two and a half years, and I really enjoy that (the magazine gets a good quality of submissions, overall!). We’re temporarily closed to fiction submissions for 2009—to catch up on our backlog of accepted stories—and I’m concentrating my efforts on the non-fiction elements of the magazine. Now I’m working with the columnists—helping to firm up each issue’s Table of Contents, reminding people about deadlines, formatting the final text for the designer—and also working with our new Reviews Editor.
CD: What do you think readers will like most about the changes to Cemetery Dance magazine starting with CD #61?
NP: It’s a really good mix of what people have always loved about the magazine—returning columns by Bev Vincent, Tom Monteleone, Michael Marano, and Robert Morrish—combined with some new additions. Don D’Auria of Leisure Books will contribute a column that gives us a behind-the-scenes look at editing his mass market line ofhorror novels; editor Ellen Datlow willshare her critical insights as well, commenting recent books she’s read. Mark Sieber of the Horror Drive-In site will represent the fan’s perspective, with his distinctive blend of nostalgia and appreciation for today’s trends—and he’ll consider films and books. I’m also very pleased that Ed Gorman will be returning with a regular column. His “Gormania” ran for many years in Cemetery Dance, and I hope his “Fine Points” column runs for a long time, too!
CD: Your first novella, Invisible Fences, will be out later this year from Cemetery Dance. What can you tell us about it?
NP: The first part of the book is a coming-of-age tale, about a narrator whose parents often went too far with their “cautionary tales.” As an adult, the character tends to avoid any dangerous situations—but he isn’t entirely successful, of course, and eventually it becomes a haunted house story, of a sorts. In many ways, the book is a tribute to my parents, who bought me those horror comics and movies when I was little, and let me stay up on weekends to watch Count Gore de Vol’s Creature Feature. I still remember how my Dad would summarize his favorite horror movies when I was a kid, and I had to wait years until they showed up on those 4 or 5 local channels we could tune in during those dark days before cable and DVD.
CD: What else do you have coming out this year?
NP: My story “The Albright Sextuplets” just came out in Shivers V, which I’m very excited about, and I’m also really proud of one that’s coming up this spring, “In the Porches of My Ears,” which will appear in PS Publishing’s excellent Postscripts magazine. Other than that, not a lot that I’m allowed to mention yet, but maybe a story in a chapbook or two, and also a kind of collaborative effort that will be very, very cool.
CD: Are you working on anything new?
NP: I’m working on a story sequence called “Four Legs in the Morning.” It should be a trilogy, but so far only the first two stories are finished. I also have three novels in various states of completion—I probably should get back to one of those!
CD: Thanks for your time, Norman!
NP: My pleasure! By the way, I invite readers to check out my website, www.normanprentiss.com—there’s some free fiction and poetry, and links to my LiveJournal and Message Board.

Massive New Collection In-Stock and Shipping NOW!
"Ron Kelly is an important talent in the horror field. His work is dark and swift with a Southern accent. Watch for him!"
— Joe R. Lansdale
"Ronald Kelly is a remarkable entertainer with a literary voice to match."
— Locus
It's dark. Crickets chirp in the black of night, accompanied by the lonesome
call of a whippoorwill. On the front porch of a ramshackle house, pale moonlight
reveals two forms in rocking chairs, facing one another. Just you and the storyteller.
You are uneasy at first, a little nervous… but for what reason? After
all, they are only tall tales and folklore passed down from generation to generation.
Just a bunch of ghost stories and strange yarns conjured up for your entertainment.
Or are they? Perhaps, in some dreadful way, they are based more in fact, than
in fiction.
You sit there in silence for a long moment. You contemplate making an excuse
and taking your leave. But it is too late. In hushed tones, the storyteller
begins. The crickets grow disturbingly quiet and the whippoorwill is replaced
by the far away howling of a dog. Or something vaguely – and sinisterly
– similar.
Then the storytelling session begins. And the darkness about you grows even
darker…
The children of an itinerant farm family are secretly terrorized by a deranged
handyman with a fetish for stone-honed steel and a deadly question upon his
whiskered lips…
A Southern gentleman discovers that his demure and delicate wife suffers from
a horrible physical ailment that originates not from without, but within…
An infamous and dangerous gator reigns fear and death upon the dark swamps of
Black Bayou and, for one unfortunate Cajun, turns its underwater lair into a
watery Hell…
Two Atlanta homicide detectives discover that a recent rash of cold-blooded
murders – and the grisly trophies collected from the victims – lead
to a horror born of cold winds and insanity…
A popular rockabilly star shares the secret of his sudden rise to fame and
the awful price he has paid to attain success…
A prodigal son returns to his hometown to find that nothing has changed…
or has it, due to some hidden and forgotten evil from centuries past?
An eager fan of horror films travels cross-country in search of his favorite
scream queen, only to find that some infatuations should be left unexplored…
And there are other tales, just as dark and disturbing. Tales that roll off
the storyteller's tongue like a smooth and subtle poison… dragging
you downward, further downward into the shadowy depths of a dark and disturbing
imagination.
In his first short story collection of his long and acclaimed career, Ronald Kelly spins an array of unsavory
tales that could only beat in the dark heart of Dixie. Come, have a seat on the ol' front porch and experience the blackness
and depravity that lies, hidden but alive, amid the kudzu and magnolias south
of the Mason-Dixon Line...

Hell Hollow

A Massive Original Novel -- 500 Pages of Southern Horror!

From out of a shadowy backwoods hollow, echoes a dark threat from the past,
nearly a century lost and forgotten.
The rural town of Harmony, Tennessee possessed a disturbing secret; a secret
so ancient that most of its residents were completely unaware of it. Even the
last survivors of a vigilante raid long ago have filed the tragic events of
that autumn night away, totally unaware of the evil that remains, dormant, but
forever patient, among the tall pines and thick-leaved kudzu of a place known
only as Hell Hollow.
There it would have remained, unrevealed, if not for a handful of unknowing
participants. Four kids, bored for excitement during one of the hottest summers
on record. A killer on the run, dodging his latest atrocity. And a rape victim
on a deadly mission – scarred in both body and mind. All have a hand in
bringing forth an unspeakable evil from the dark woods of Hell Hollow.
He is a skeletal
figure in top hat and tails, brandishing a handful of magical cards and a patented
elixir that was brewed in the very depths of Purgatory. And he has returned for what he is owed.
Praise for the Author:
"Ron Kelly is an important talent in the horror field. His work is dark and swift with a Southern accent. Watch for him!
— Joe R. Lansdale
"Kelly writes with a voice and style all his own, and is making a serious move into the top ranks of the genre."
— Mystery Scene
"Kelly writes colorful, cannonading outdoors horror that creeps into the pit of your belly like a fanged muzzle and doesn't let go! It is the best kind of all-out attack of terror, because Kelly does his homework and knows how to make the incredible credible."
— J.N. Williamson
"Ronald Kelly is a remarkable entertainer with a literary voice to match."

Important Cemetery Dance Magazine News!
Hi
Folks!
As you may have read in Richard Chizmar's first "Words From the Publisher" column yesterday, there are some very exciting changes coming for Cemetery Dance magazine. Today we wanted to provide you with more details:
Our two most important goals are getting back on schedule while continuing to present the best combination of horror fiction and non-fiction. As in the past, the magazine is still going to feature 90 to 136 pages of great writing — a terrific value for the $5 cover price — so we're going to keep what's great about the magazine and make the rest even better! The biggest names in the genre are already working on brand new fiction for the next few issues, plus we have great interviews in the works and other cool exclusives you won't read anywhere else.
In fact, the always popular Special Issues are coming back and the first two will be dedicated to two of the biggest names in the genre, Peter Straub and William Peter Blatty. We'll be posting more about the incredible contents of these special issues in the coming months, but we think readers are going to be thrilled with the rarities these authors are making available here for the first time ever.
To meet our goals, we're also adding staff and making other changes to how we distribute the production responsibilities. Here are some of the changes that might be of interest to readers:
Cemetery Dance #60 is Bob Morrish's last issue as the editor, but he isn't going far. He has been shining a “Spotlight on Publishing” since way back in CD #8 (Spring 1991). There have been a lot of changes in the publishing world over the years, both in the New York publishing houses and in the small press, and Morrish will continue to interview key players in genre publishing to keep readers abreast of the latest developments and trends.
Richard Chizmar is, of course, still the Publisher and Executive Editor and has been working with some incredibly talented authors on the contents for the next three issues. He will continue running the magazine and shaping our overall vision and plans for many years to come.
Brian Freeman, who has been coordinating much of the book production for Cemetery Dance Publications these last couple of years, is now also going to be the Managing Editor for the magazine. His duties include working with the editors, the art director, and the authors to keep everyone on schedule, plus conducting the occasional interview. He is also developing a new feature called "The Final Question", which will debut in CD #61.
Norman Prentiss's role as Associate Editor is growing every day. He's coordinating and editing all of the columnists and he's working with our new Review Section editor to create a schedule and completely re-invent the section.
Mindy Jarusek will continue in her role as art director for the magazine, working with both new and established artists. We solicit all our cover and interior artwork directly for each specific story, etc. If you're an artist who is interested in our publications, please see Mindy's guidelines here: http://www.cemeterydance.com/page/CDP/Guidelines
Nanci Kalanta, who has spent many years running her excellent website HorrorWorld.org, is the new Review Section editor. She and Norman are already working hard to ensure the reviews are much more timely for our readers. Below you'll find more complete details of our new relationship with Nanci and Horror World.
Kate Freeman, our talented book designer who handles our most complicated projects (such as The Secretary of Dreams, The Devil's Wine, the Signature Series, and dozens of others over the last seven years), will now be designing the magazine. We'll be debuting a brand new look and feel for the magazine with CD #61 that will make the magazine more readable, along with being more attractive on the newsstand and to the "buyers" at the chains who decide how many copies to purchase for each store.
Since the beginning of the year, Andrea Wilson has been learning her new role as Assistant Editor. She's working with authors, copyediting manuscripts, and handling the important paperwork that helps a publication stay on schedule.
And finally, the new Contributing Editors are: Don D'Auria, Ellen Datlow, Ed Gorman, Nanci Kalanta, Michael Marano, Thomas F. Monteleone, Robert Morrish, Mark Sieber, and Bev Vincent.
In addition, there are some big changes and big plans for the Cemetery Dance columnists starting with Cemetery Dance #61:
Returning Favorites!
“News From the Dead Zone” by Bev Vincent is the only feature column devoted to Stephen King, and it only appears in Cemetery Dance magazine. This column features exclusive insider information on all Stephen King news, events, and upcoming projects. Click here for a sample: http://www.cemeterydance.com/page/CDP/DEADZONE
“MediaDrone” by Michael Marano offers the kind of movie criticism you won’t find in your local newspaper or Entertainment Weekly. Since issue 35 of Cemetery Dance, he’s offered perceptive, serious reviews of genre movies—praising films that mainstream critics pretend to loathe, or annihilating the latest bloated Hollywood blockbuster. Click here for a sample: http://www.cemeterydance.com/page/CDP/MediaDrome
Thomas F. Monteleone’s classic “M.A.F.I.A.” column is the most irreverent, entertaining, and longest-running column in the history of horror and dark fantasy, dealing with all things publishing. Monteleone writes about breaking in, breaking out, being successful, and being a failure-—all in his inimitable, “tell it like it is” style. Click here for a sample:
http://www.cemeterydance.com/page/CDP/Mafia
And as mentioned above, Robert Morrish's “Spotlight on Publishing” won't be stopping any time soon.
New columns and columnists!
Don D'Auria publishes 24 mass market horror novels a year as part of Leisure Books’ horror line. Find out how a publisher chooses manuscripts, and works with both established and upcoming genre authors, as D’Auria shares his “Editorial Perspectives” with Cemetery Dance readers, giving them “A View from the Other Side of the Desk.”
To say that Ellen Datlow has read a lot of books and stories would be an understatement. For over 20 years she edited the horror half of St. Martin’s essential Year’s Best Fantasy and Horror, and edited numerous original anthologies including Inferno, which recently won the IHG award and World Fantasy Award. Now, in the pages of Cemetery Dance, you’ll find out what Datlow thinks about “The Last 10 Books I’ve Read.”
Ed Gorman’s popular “Gormania” column ran for many years in Cemetery Dance, starting with issue 6 (Fall 1990). This multi-genre author returns to the magazine to explore the “Fine Points.” Whether he’s writing about horror, mystery, or suspense, you can be sure Gorman’s observations will be sharp and insightful.
Some people think the drive-in movie theater is a thing of the past, but Mark Sieber’s “Horror Drive-In” has been one of the Internet’s best-kept secrets since early 2006. Sieber combines nostalgia for the old days of drive-ins and Famous Monsters of Filmland, with a passion for today’s independent films and small press fiction. His column explores the state of the genre, from a true fan’s perspective.
Announcing Review Partnership with Horror World
Cemetery Dance Publications is pleased to announce a new partnership with the Horror World website. Nanci Kalanta, proprietor and editor of Horror World website for five years, has been hired as the Reviews Editor for Cemetery Dance magazine, starting with issue #61.
Nanci will continue her monthly reviews section at Horror World, but she will now have access to all of the review copies submitted to Cemetery Dance every month by small presses, New York publishers, and foreign presses. In addition, thanks to this new partnership, some of the reviews from Horror World will also be selected for appearance in the pages of Cemetery Dance.
There will also be an in-depth “feature” review that will appear only in the magazine—a review of an important new anthology, the latest release by one of our favorite authors, or another notable title of that nature.
Nanci’s roster of reviewers will include regulars from the pages of Cemetery Dance, along with writers she has already worked with over the years for the Horror World reviews section. This approach will allow Cemetery Dance to introduce new voices to the magazine's review section while retaining the reviewers our readers already know well.
Most importantly, the partnership between the Horror World website and Cemetery Dance will allow for the timely appearance of reviews. If a book’s publication is imminent, the review will appear first on Horror World so readers are kept current on new releases. Reviews that are completed well in advance of a book’s publication can appear simultaneously in Cemetery Dance and on the Horror World site around the time of publication.
As noted above, these changes will only affect the Reviews sections of Cemetery Dance and the Horror World website. Cemetery Dance will still showcase over 100 pages of exclusive original fiction, unique columns (including some exciting new columns to be announced over the next few weeks), and some other special features that will be announced with CD #61. Horror World will continue with its own original content: columns, interviews, and a short story by a featured genre author.
Due to space concerns, not all reviews on the Horror World site will appear in our magazine, so be sure to check both Horror World and Cemetery Dance for the latest reviews and new releases!
(*Note: effective immediately, to avoid the appearance of a conflict of interest, Horror World will no longer post reviews of books published by Cemetery Dance Publications.)
That's about all for now. We'll be sending out more updates on the magazine and our other plans for this year soon!
"Words From the Publisher"
by Richard Chizmar

More Praise For
Elsewhere
by William Peter Blatty
"Horror old-timer Blatty (The Exorcist) takes a new route down an old road in this disorienting tale. Realtor Joan Freeboard, trying to dispel the title mansion's creepy reputation, arranges for a psychic, a parapsychologist and a noted author to move into
Elsewhere with her and declare it ghost-free. Isolated by a storm from civilization, they become absorbed by the house and its growing sense of strangeness; exploring its secrets exposes their own. Ultimately, Elsewhere forces them to accept the individual realities that they have created for themselves. Blatty neatly entwines the twin branches of psychological and supernatural horror, and save for a late scene of violence, the work is more life-affirming than shocking. Includes otherworldly b&w illus by Alex McVey."
— Publishers Weekly
"In many ways this excellent haunted house tale is a psychological suspense thriller as much of the story line (except for the climax) follows the quartet as the house coaxes them to reveal their secrets. Illustrations by Alex McVey add depth to the atmosphere of pending doom. Fans of Peter Blatty will welcome his fresh approach of psychological paranormal paradigm twist to the haunted house horror sub-genre."
— Alternative Worlds
"Elsewhere proves that the man who terrified us with The Exorcist still has the power to captivate and to scare the reader."
— Denise Dumars in Mania
"Blatty proves that a good haunted house story can still be written. Elsewhere is haunting and genuinely eerie. Though the book is short it still packs quite a wallop. Blatty’s crisp writing and characterizations will keep you turning the pages. He once again proves that there are things beyond our understanding that are truly terrifying whether it be a possessed girl or a possessed house. If you like being scared, if you sleep with your closet door shut tight and a light on you will enjoy this book. I emphatically recommend it. If you don’t like being scared my advice would be not to read it, you might not like what it does to you."
— Peter David Schwotzer, Famous Monsters of Filmland
"Possession is the indisputable peanut butter to William Peter Blatty's chocolate. The writer who gave us the landmark THE EXORCIST returns with Elsewhere, a short work from Cemetery Dance that represents his first novel since 1996."
— Rod Lott, Bookgasm.com

Stephen King's New Novella News!
Are You Reading the Dead Zone?
If you check the online version of Bev Vincent's "News From the Dead Zone" frequently, you've already read this news! If not, be sure to bookmark his page on our website so you don't miss future news and updates!
Here is the start of Bev's latest post:
King's next novella, "Ur," was inspired by
the Amazon Kindle book reader. At today's launch of the Kindle2, Amazon
announced that "Ur" would be available on the newest version of the
device. Early indications were that it was to be an exclusive release, but there
may be a non-Kindle version available for purchase as well. Stay tuned for more
details as they become available.
Here's a description of the story:
"Following a nasty break-up, lovelorn
college English instructor Wesley Smith can't seem to get his ex-girlfriend's
parting shot out of his head: 'Why can't you just read off the computer like the
rest of us?' Egged on by her question and piqued by a student's suggestion,
Wesley places an order for Amazon.com's Kindle eReader. The [pink?] device that
arrives in a box stamped with the smile logo -- via one-day delivery that he
hadn't requested -- unlocks a literary world that even the most avid of book
lovers could never imagine. But once the door is open, there are those things
that one hopes we'll never read or live through."

The Secretary of Dreams (Volume 2)
by Stephen King
Important Artwork Updates!
As we mentioned in our last update, The Secretary of Dreams (Volume 2) by Stephen King has been designed and is being proofread right now, but Glenn Chadbourne noticed a few places in three of the stories where he could squeeze in even more artwork and asked if we'd mind. Since the signature sheets are still in the works and the interior isn't set for the printer, we told him to go for it!
This week Glenn turned in THIRTEEN MORE illustrations for "The Monkey" and he's already working on more for the other stories. You can see some samples of just a few of these illustrations in this special new art gallery on our website:
http://www.cemeterydance.com/page/CDP/Graven09
There will be HUNDREDS of illustrations in the final book, but we just wanted to give you a taste of what's to come. Here is the link to the previous preview pages we've posted:

A Sneak Peek at Some of Our Winter and Spring Releases
We're currently hammering out the last details of our production and shipping schedule for the rest of winter and the spring with our printers, so we wanted to give you a sneak peek at some of the previously announced books you can expect to ship during that period. We are working hard on all of the other previously announced projects and expect to publish most of them this year. More specific updates on particular titles will be sent out over the next few months. Thanks for your patience!

A collection of the darkest and nastiest Etchison stories that have not been included in any of his recent collections. If you love horrific short stories, you need this collection in your personal library! Publishers Weekly said, "The title story caps off the collection with a brutally exquisite showing of what Etchison does best: creating a tone and wielding it like an edged weapon."
• Elsewhere by William Peter Blatty:
This incredible haunted house novel from William Peter Blatty, the legendary author of The Exorcist, is disturbing, unsettling, chilling, and laced with a nasty streak of dark humor. Elsewhere is a must-have for all fans of dark fiction and sure to become a time-honored classic in the genre.
"Horror old-timer Blatty (The Exorcist) takes a new route down an old road in this disorienting tale. Realtor Joan Freeboard, trying to dispel the title mansion's creepy reputation, arranges for a psychic, a parapsychologist and a noted author to move into Elsewhere with her and declare it ghost-free. Isolated by a storm from civilization, they become absorbed by the house and its growing sense of strangeness; exploring its secrets exposes their own. • Occasional Demons by Rick Hautala:

"Glenn Chadbourne's illustrations perfectly complement the text." — Publishers Weekly
• As we mentioned above, this is not a definitive list of everything at the printer or everything we expect to publish in the coming months, so keep watching your inbox for some very exciting announcements.
Thanks again for your patience while we work hard to get caught-up on our production schedule.

"Bukowski meets Lovecraft in this collection of more than 100 short poems from Stoker-winner Graves (Blood of a Black Bird). She explores a diversity of themes, including love, the search for self and the ubiquity of death in all its forms, from a scorned woman contemplating murder to a flying dinosaur devouring all in its path. Grave's cynical wit and macabre imagination are showcased in “Ladies of the Night,” where female barflies are likened to melancholy vampires; the brilliantly allegorical “Unwanted Yellow Flowers,” where lawn mowers have “metallic teeth” and dandelions “lay in wait/for the kiss of death”; and “Slick Eddie Dog One-Fifty-One,” where a killer describes his victims as matchbooks full of dormant fire. Though there's no real narrative thread of progression to the hodgepodge of dark imagery, horror aficionados will enjoy the wry, nihilistic verse."

LOW STOCK WARNING!
The Big Book of Necon Signed, Numbered, and Slipcased Edition!
Only 350 Copies Will Be Printed and They're Almost ALL Gone!
Plus: A Production Update
After checking our sales reports this week, we've discovered we're down to the very last copies of the signed and slipcased Limited Edition of The Big Book of Necon, which includes the first Limited Edition printing of Stephen King's "The Old Dude's Ticker" (a "collaboration" with Edgar Allan Poe) and other fantastic contributions by Peter Straub, Neil Gaiman, Jack Ketchum, Rick Hautala, Thomas Tessier, Chet Williamson, Douglas Clegg, Brian Keene, Ramsey Campbell, Douglas Winter, Thomas Monteleone, Gahan Wilson, Jonathan Carroll, John Coyne, Alan Ryan, Lucius Shepard, Graham Joyce, Tim Lebbon, and over 30 other artists and authors who have made Necon the most popular convention of the horror genre over the last three decades!
The special Signed and Numbered Edition is limited to just 350 SLIPCASED copies, signed by over 50 contributors excluding King on four pages of signature sheets -- and we're almost completely SOLD OUT!
This title is moving through production very smoothly. Bob Booth and his designer have delivered the interior files and the pages are currently being proofread. We'll be sending the corrections back to Bob early next month. There might be one more round of proofreading after that, just to be safe.
The signature sheets are jetting around the world at a pretty good clip. There are 4 sets of sheets for EACH signed edition -- Limited, Artist, and Lettered -- so it's taking the authors a little bit of time to get all of them signed, but we now have 40% of the authors finished, including several in the UK and even one in Brazil. One of the sets of the sheets is almost completely finished, while another still has some Non-US destinations (which simply take longer due to different foreign post offices being involved), but we'll post more updates as they get closer to completion.

About the Book:
Worlds created; nightmares given. The universe is a tiny grain of sand, and
by turns, it opens up into a revolving world of horrific little poems in Barfodder by Rain Graves.
Each poem tells a distinct story—from serial killers, to love and loss,
to the raising of Cthulhu in a haiku.
Each poem in this collection was inspired by and written in a dark bar or questionable
café throughout her travels...called forth by ominous candles, succulent
liquors, and velvet curtains to delight the reader with a sensory of dark, demonic,
luxurious imagery.
It slides off the tongue like river slime...or a very good port (depending
on if you swallow).
"Rain Graves' poetry is, by turns, surreal and very real, grand
and romantic as the tango and nasty—even downright gross—as bugs
crawling through your bed at night, burrowing through your sleeping bones. She
can be funny and spooky and angry and tender and sometimes truly haunting, essaying
life's tragedies and joys and triumphs with equal vigor. She's erotic and she's
wicked."

British Invasion
edited by Christopher Golden, Tim Lebbon, and James A. Moore
NOW IN-STOCK AND SHIPPING THIS WEEK!
All New Dark Fiction by Allen Ashley, Kealan Patrick Burke, Ramsey Campbell,
Mark Chadbourn, Peter Crowther, Paul Finch, Gary Fry, Joel Lane, Steve Lockley
& Paul Lewis, James Lovegrove, Paul Meloy, Mark Morris, Adam Nevill, Philip
Nutman, Sarah Pinborough, Tony Richards, Gord Rollo, Nicholas Royle, John Travis,
Conrad Williams, and "Anonymous."
They've invaded before, sending their best and brightest
to transform popular music for all time. This time, they're leaving the music
behind and focusing on words. The British Invasion has begun again, in a collection
of twenty-one unforgettable stories of horror and the dark fantastic.
From the birthplace of horror fiction, the land where writers first dreamed
up the icons that shaped the field we know today — Frankenstein's
monster, Count Dracula, the vile Mr. Hyde and more. You think you know desperation?
Discover a literary tradition born from centuries of violence, pain, and suffering,
distilled through the veneer of civility, and twisted by the reign of tyrants
and kings.
You think you know fear?
From creeping dread to hideous humor, from quiet terror to brutal horror, from
mad speculation to unspeakable truth, the twenty-one tales here represent the
best that the U.K. has to offer. The rising stars and the masters of British
horror have joined together.
The British Invasion has begun.
Reviews & Praise:
"From Gord Rollo's transcendentally eerie tale of a comatose young boy's
revenge ("Lost in a Field of Paper Flowers") to Mark Morris's cautionary
tale about a pair of unorthodox vampires ("Puppies for Sale"), the
21 original stories in this anthology establish the strength of British horror
writers. Contributors include Ramsey Campbell, Sarah Pinborough, Conrad Williams,
Peter Crowther, and other veterans and new authors. A strong collection of contemporary
horror from across the pond..."
— Library Journal
"The British may not have invented the modern horror story, as the editors
of this all-original anthology claim, but the 21 stories they've selected prove
that contemporary U.K. writers are infiltrating American publishing markets
with some of the most provocative horror fiction written today. Refreshingly
devoid of genre clichés, these subtle tales offer ambiguously supernatural
horrors from the dramas and traumas of everyday life. Nicholas Royle, in The
Goldfinch, gives chronic illness an unsettling spin by objectifying a man's
cancer as a relentless shadowy stalker. Mark Morris's Puppies for Sale presents
a nuclear family's gradual implosion as a consequence of a malignant supernatural
influence that may be a complete figment of the distraught father's mind. In
Conrad Williams's Slitten Gorge, the disconnect between the unpolluted natural
world and the protagonist's industrially despoiled environment achieves an aura
of otherworldly horror. The book's title notwithstanding, there's nothing peculiarly
British about these stories, but their authors are exceptionally articulate
in the universal language of horror."

Road Rage: Stephen King, Joe Hill, and Richard Matheson Together At Last!
Featuring
Stephen King's first collaboration with his son Joe Hill!
A once-in-a-lifetime publishing event!
And We Have A Few Left To Sell!
Stephen King, Joe Hill, and Richard Matheson come together for the
first time in this once-in-a-lifetime Horror Double Feature audio
experience!
First up is Throttle, the brand
new novella and first-ever collaboration
ever between Stephen King and his son Joe Hill! That's right! This is their take on Matheson's classic "Duel." This is,
obviously, a once-in-a-lifetime publishing event! The protagonists
are father-son members of a motorcycle gang that's being chased through
the desert by an 18-wheel tanker truck. This explosive novella builds
to a shocking ending that has the literary world talking! Movie producer
Nick Wechsler (The Fountain, 25th Hour) has optioned the film rights
and he compared the story to Steven Spielberg's first movie, Duel.
Second up on this Horror Double Feature is Duel by Richard Matheson, the classic novella about a man stalked through
the desert by a killer tractor trailer. This novella was, of course,
adapted by Matheson into a screenplay that became the first feature
film directed by Steven Spielberg!
Please note that we're getting ready to finalize our order for this item, and our copies of the hardcover featuring "Throttle" are SOLD OUT and we won't be getting more, so this is your BEST WAY to get your hands on Stephen King and Joe Hill's first-ever collaboration!
Together these two tales of terror in the desert come together to make Road Rage, and the results are sure to be absolutely
terrifying!

The Cage by Brian Keene
Cover artwork from Alan Clark!
Brian Keene is hard at work on the manuscript for The
Cage (Novella Series #22), and what we've read so far is some of his best writing to date. As soon as he's happy with the manuscript, we'll send a copy to Keith Minnion for the interior artwork and a copy to our designer to rush the book into production.
This week Alan Clark turned in his beautiful cover artwork for the book and we'll post the finished cover design as soon as we have it. You can see a sneak peek of the art to the right.
About The Cage by Brian Keene:
For the employees of Big Bill's Home Electronics, it's just the end of another
workday—until a gunman bursts into the stores and begins shooting. Now,
with some of their co-workers dead, the hostages are being slaughtered one-by-one,
and if they want to survive the night, they'll have to escape... The Cage.

Other Novella Series News
As part of our efforts to get caught up on some of our older titles, we're not going to announce the rest of the next batch of the Novella Series just yet, but we wanted to let you know there are THREE unannounced Novella Series books headed to the printer right now, plus 4 more new titles are already in the works for the next round. The authors are writing the manuscripts, and we're very excited about these new additions to the series.
All in all, we have some really exciting plans and announcements for fans of the Novella Series, but until we're a little further along in our plan to catch-up on older books, we're going to wait before we share that news with everyone else. Thanks for your patience and support!

Hi Folks!
Lots of big news and updates to come over the next few weeks, so let's get right to today's post:
•
Barfodder: Poetry Written in Dark Bars & Questionable Cafes by Rain Graves and British Invasion edited by Christopher Golden, Tim Lebbon, and James A. Moore are shipping to us from the printer this week. These will be our first two releases of 2009 and we couldn't be more thrilled with how they turned out.
Barfodder will be added to our online store on Monday and copies will be available to ship right away. If you've never read Graves' poetry before, you're in for a treat. Here's what Neil Gaiman has to say of her work: "Rain Graves writes really nasty poetry. She is a mistress of creating images that stick, the kind that you cannot get out of your mind—not even using steel wool and a small, extremely sharp knife."
If you haven't preordered British Invasion, this is your LAST CHANCE to order a copy of this massive anthology and receive FREE SHIPPING to US mailing addresses. Inside the beautiful cover artwork by Les Edwards you'll find an introduction by Stephen Volk, an Afterword by Kim Newman, and all new dark fiction by Allen Ashley, Kealan Patrick Burke, Ramsey Campbell, Mark Chadbourn, Peter Crowther, Paul Finch, Gary Fry, Joel Lane, Steve Lockley & Paul Lewis, James Lovegrove, Paul Meloy, Mark Morris, Adam Nevill, Philip Nutman, Sarah Pinborough, Tony Richards, Gord Rollo, Nicholas Royle, John Travis, Conrad Williams, and an author who can only be known as "Anonymous."
This incredible collection has been praised by Library Journal ("From Gord Rollo's transcendentally eerie tale of a comatose young boy's revenge to Mark Morris's cautionary tale about a pair of unorthodox vampires, the 21 original stories in this anthology establish the strength of British horror writers") and Publishers Weekly ("their authors are exceptionally articulate in the universal language of horror."), so the early distributor orders are very strong. Place your order now or you might miss out!
• Last year was a slower year than we had planned for, but we still released 15 new books and made great production headway on catching up on older titles. The results of all of that hard work in production will really be evident in 2009 -- in fact, this year we will hit our first 15 new releases within a matter of months! After Barfodder and British Invasion, we have another 12 titles due in during winter and spring alone. We have over 15 books at the printer right now and another 12 ready to go, with another 12 deep in production and even more starting their journey to publication.
Many of these books are older preorders that we're working hard to get into your hands as soon as possible, but there are also a lot of great new unannounced projects in the works from some of our favorite authors including Stephen King, William Peter Blatty, Peter Straub, Douglas Clegg, Ray Garton, Jack Ketchum, Simon Clark, Tim Lebbon, Christopher Golden, Brian Keene, Rick Hautala, Joe R. Lansdale, Edward Lee, Al Sarrantonio, F. Paul Wilson, Ronald Kelly, Kealan Patrick Burke, Ed Gorman, T.M. Wright, Tom Piccirilli, and many many others. 2009 is going to be a HUGE year here at Cemetery Dance.
• One of the big changes this year will be the retirement of Bob Morrish as editor of Cemetery Dance magazine. We're going to miss working with Bob, but he isn't going far. He'll still be contributing to the magazine and designing books for the hardcover line. Bob's last issue is Cemetery Dance #60, which is being proofread right now.
We'll have some big magazine related surprises to unveil in the coming weeks including personnel changes and design changes starting with #61. We're already lining up contributions by some of the biggest horror authors that readers already know and love, plus we've stocked up on stories by the rising stars of the genre you'll be reading for years to come. We already have dozens of excellent stories, interviews, and articles in place for future issues.
All of the planning and organizing we've been doing for this transition will pay off as part of our renewed effort to stay on schedule. We know the magazine hasn't received the attention it deserved lately, but we think the energy we poured into production for the book line last year will be worth the effort this year, and we will get the magazine back on track.
In fact, between the great new authors we've been finding in the submission pile and some brand new works from some of the major writers in the genre, Cemetery Dance magazine has acquired enough fiction to carry us through 2010.
For that reason, Cemetery Dance will be temporarily closed to fiction submissions for the calendar year of 2009. If you have a story under consideration, you will hear back from our office soon. Any submissions received after January 21st will be returned unread.
Because we receive up to 500 submissions a month, and we have approximately 8 fiction slots available per issue, we decided to close our fiction submissions temporarily so authors can place their stories in other markets while we concentrate on publishing stories already submitted/accepted. In addition, the magazine's Associate Editor will be able to redirect his efforts this year to assisting with the important organizational changes we'll be making to the magazine.
• Finally, we're pleased to announce a big addition to the website that will be going live in the coming weeks. Starting later this month, Richard Chizmar will be writing occasional updates on Cemetery Dance, our upcoming projects, Chesapeake Films, and other topics that might be of interest to horror readers. This new "Words From the Publisher" column will debut with a post detailing the exciting changes to the magazine and some information about our new staff members, so watch your inbox to find out where you can read the column.
We have a very busy year planned, and we hope you'll stay tuned to the website and this newsletter for the big announcements. We'll have a lot more news to share soon, including updates on specific projects and some great new books.
As always, thanks for your continuing support!
Huge Production
Update:
Stephen King, William Peter Blatty, Neil Gaiman, Christopher Golden, Tim Lebbon, Simon Clark, James Newman, Kealan Patrick Burke, Brian Keene, F. Paul Wilson, Ray Garton, The Big Book of Necon, In Laymon's Terms, The Century's Best Horror Fiction, Stephen King selects Old Flames by Jack Ketchum as one of his 10 Best Books of 2008, and more!
In addition to the hundreds of illustrations he already created for The Secretary of Dreams (Volume Two) by Stephen King, Glenn Chadbourne is currently working hard on TEN more full page illustrations. There was already a ton of artwork in the book, but we found a few places where we thought we could fit even more, and Glenn agreed! Those images will be inserted into the text after the next round of proofreading is completed. Last week we posted a brand new page on our site that features MORE early samples of Glenn Chadbourne's interior artwork. Here is the link to the page:
http://www.cemeterydance.com/page/CDP/Graven08
The artwork we had posted earlier can still be viewed here:
http://www.cemeterydance.com/page/CDP/Graven06
Stephen King, writing in Entertainment Weekly, has selected Old Flames by Jack Ketchum as one of his 10 Best Books of 2008. Here's what he had to say: "Remember Glenn Close as the bunny-boiler scorned in Fatal Attraction? Raise that to the 10th power and you get Dora Welles, the crazy ex-girlfriend in this short chiller."
British
Invasion edited by Christopher Golden, Tim Lebbon, and James A. Moore will ship early next year.
Moonbane and Halloween: New Poems are undergoing one last round of proofreading and then they'll be headed to the printer.
Butterfly by Simon Clark, The
Forum by James Newman, The
Turtle Boy: Peregrine's Tale by Kealan Patrick Burke, and Scratch by Brian Keene are all now finished and ready for the printer. We're just waiting on one last set of signature sheets and then these four new Cemetery Dance Signature Series books will be headed to the printer early next year.
We have three new entries in the Cemetery Dance Novella Series almost ready for the printer, and Brian Keene expects to turn in his manuscript for The Cage in January. In addition, he's already working with Alan M. Clark on the cover artwork.
Stephen King: The Non-Fiction is finished at the printer and we're now just waiting on the slipcases to be completed.
Stephen King's The Dark Tower: The Complete Concordance is almost done at the printer and our slipcase maker is working on the prototype for the cases.
Elsewhere by William Peter Blatty is receiving terrific reviews and we expect to publish it in the first half of 2009:
"Possession is the indisputable peanut butter to William Peter Blatty’s chocolate. The writer who gave us the landmark THE EXORCIST returns with ELSEWHERE, a short work from Cemetery Dance that represents his first novel since 1996."
— Rod Lott, Bookgasm.com
The interior design of Prince
of Stories: The Many Worlds of Neil Gaiman by Hank Wagner, Christopher Golden, and Stephen R. Bissette is complete now and proofreading should begin early next month. This book is HUGE and we think our collectors will be thrilled with all of the great special touches our designer and the editors have come up with so far.
Serpent Girl by Ray Garton just received this terrific review:
"Serpent Girl, his latest in a long line of books from Cemetery Dance, seems to display the influence of the hardboiled crime novels and films of the 1940s and '50s: to wit, the beautiful woman whom trouble seems to follow and the world-weary man who is so attracted to her, he doesn't realize what he's gotten into until very late in the game. Steven and Elise fit their roles well, but each has a little secret in store for the other. This blend of sex, horror, and crime fiction (I like to call it "erotic noirror," but your mileage may vary) plays to Garton's strengths: creative plots and the rare ability to know when to paint with broad strokes and when to be more detailed... Garton's longtime fans will definitely be satisfied by Serpent Girl."
— Craig Clarke, GreenManReview.com
We're entering the corrections from the most recent round of proofreading for Volume Two of The Century's Best Horror Fiction right now. The signature sheets are moving slowly among the contributors, but we're doing our best to move them along. You can now see the special color artwork for the Lettered Edition on the product page.
Bob Booth turned in the interior design of The Big Book of Necon last week and we're going to give it one more read in-house before preparing it for the printer. All of the signature sheets are circulating among the contributors, but with 50+ people needing to sign these (and some of them as far away as Brazil!), it will take a while. We expect to publish this book in 2009.
King Blood by Simon Clark is undergoing one last round of proofreading and then it'll be ready for the printer.
All of the signature sheets for In Laymon's Terms have been signed (by around 50 contributors!) and the interior of the book has been proofread several times. We're waiting on one last contribution from one of the editors and then it'll be ready to go to the printer.
Sims (Book 5: Thy Brother's Keeper) by F. Paul Wilson is at the printer and we expect to publish it next year.
Cemetery
Dance #59 has been shipping from the printer all month, and if you haven't received your copy yet, you should soon. Bulk mail can be a little slow this time of year.
We'll be posting more updates soon, and you can always check each book's page on our site for the current news. As always, thanks for your continuing support!

Featuring a special afterword by the author explaining the origins
of the story!
When her lover betrays her and dumps her coldly, Dora's mind begins to crack.
She tracks down her old high school love to recapture what she might have had.
He's married with a family now, but Dora isn't about to let that stop her....
Excerpt from the story:
So here I am again, she thought. This is far too familiar.
There was pain of course but she embraced the pain as she always did. He was
big and she was not, so she could count on pain with him. Tears and sweat were
pretty much the same thing anyway she thought. She was opposed to neither.
But there was yearning. That old unwanted acquaintance.
She wanted—maybe even needed this time—to see his face. A face
could speak what the body didn’t. His body told her he was close to coming.
As was she. But that was all it told her. A glance over her shoulder was insufficient.
Especially in the dark. And Owen insisted on his bedroom dark the way he insisted
on taking her from behind.
But here in this room on this bed while he filled her he was emptying her too.
She could feel a winding down. She fought that. Pushed back hard into his tight
flat belly as though the slap of impact flesh against flesh and his own sounds,
his grunts and moans and harsh breathing could meld into an invisible wind that
might whirl around and enter her again through her open mouth and ears and eyes.
She wanted to be filled. Instead she relinquished wanting.
It was all she could do.

Under the Dome
the epic new novel by Stephen King!
1,500+ Pages In Manuscript Form!
As several of our customers noted, Scribner has officially added the new Stephen King novel, Under the Dome, to their 2009 publication list, so as requested we're adding it to our online store for your ordering convenience!
This is an epic novel die hard Stephen King fans first heard about in the 1980s, when King tried twice to write it without much luck, but apparently he took another shot at it earlier this year and "it's going to end up being comparable to IT and The Stand in length at the rate it's going."
King read from the beginning of the first draft at "The Three Kings" reading event at the Library of Congress back in April and he described the novel as "very, very long." The manuscript for Under the Dome was finished in August and it reportedly came in twice as long as Duma Key, at over 1,500 pages, and "deals with some of the same issues that The Stand does, but in a more allegorical way."
Obviously this is going to be the kind of epic King novel we haven't seen in a long time, so use the link below to place your preorder today!

"Al Sarrantonio's Moonbane is a stylist B-movie of a novel. Fast paced
and poetic, and scary in the old-fashioned sense of such fine B-chillers as The Cat People and I Walked With a Zombie."
— Joe
R. Lansdale
Note for the 2008 Book Club: This title will be one of your selections, but you can still take advantage of this special offer if you want!

THE ARTHUR DARKNELL DOUBLE:
On Friday we shipped 95% of the Limited Edition copies of The Arthur Darknell Double by Ray Garton! The rest will be shipping this week. We used a new material for the slipcases and the binding of the book and it looks very cool. The Lettered Edition is deep in production and our designer came up with a terrific way to showcase the unique "double" design of the book. For those who missed out on this title, we've posted a few photos in the photo section on our website:
http://www.lonelyroadbooks.com/books/arthurdarknell/photos.html
There is, of course, a lot of artwork we didn't show, but we wanted to give you a few samples of the interior of the book, too. Note that the signature sheet is in the MIDDLE of the book -- just one of the special elements we came up with to emphasize the "double" concept.
POE by STEWART O'NAN:
We now have all of the slipcases for Poe by Stewart O'Nan and we received a small shipment of "test" books from the printer. The rest of the books will be arriving before the end of the year, along with the "Monsters" chapbooks. We're already working with our traycase maker on something special for this book's Lettered Edition, and we'll post more news when we have it. In the meantime, we took a few photos of the Limited Edition and posted them in the photo section on our website:

PLEASE NOTE: YOU HAVE ONE LAST CHANCE TO GET A COPY OF POE FOR THE RETAIL PRICE!
Although Poe by Stewart O'Nan sold out within days of being announced, a dealer recently went out of business and we will be selling his copies to customers on the waiting list for this title! To join the Waiting List, send an email to info@cemeterydance.com with your contact information and one of these subject lines:
• "Poe
Limited Edition Waiting List"

Please send two different emails if you're interested in both editions. The correct subject line will allow the staff to file your request accordingly.
REMINDER: If you ordered Poe or if you are one of the lucky customers who snags a copy via the Wait List, you will be the FIRST CUSTOMERS in the world we notify about our next book... which is shaping up to be our biggest announcement yet! You will receive an email with information about this book before that information is released to the public, and you will have an exclusive window of time during which only you can order the book. And as long as you order during that exclusive window, you'll also receive a matching number to your copy of Poe so you can continue or start a matching set of Lonely Road Book titles.
* LONELY ROAD BOOKS release #4: JOIN THE LRB MAILING LIST TO BE NOTIFIED!
We can't say much more about the Top Secret project we're currently working on, but keep in mind that all three of our previous titles have sold out within days of being announced and we expect this one to be even more popular because of the author involved! We cannot tell you more right now, but if you didn't order Poe, watch for an email from the Lonely Road Books mailing list (which you can join on the website's news page!) for the official announcement. We'll email that list with all of the details about Book #4 after the Poe customers have had their chance to order it. If there are any copies left, subscribers to the LRB newsletter will get first crack at them before we send the press release out and before Cemetery Dance notifies their huge mailing list with 25,000+ collectors on it!
Thanks again to everyone for their support of Lonely Road Books.

Afterlife
by Douglas Clegg
A school for special children. An unsolved murder. A terrified widow. A dream
of blood and lost souls. A stranger with an unspeakable secret. It all comes
together in the afterlife.
Praise & Reviews:
"Starred Review. Stoker-winner Clegg (The Hour Before Dark) has
an uncanny ability to frighten readers by chronicling everyday characters' perilous
descents into their own private hells. Julie Hutchinson mentally unravels after
the brutal and mysterious murder of her husband, Jeff, in this stand-alone tale
full of subtle suspense, inventive twists and credible characters. Julie has
erotic nightmares and hideous hallucinations while slowly trying to piece together
the decades-old puzzle involving her husband's past work with Project Daylight,
a now-defunct privately funded school that conducted experiments on young children
with ESP. Eventually, with the assistance of her mother, daughter and stepson,
as well as Jeff's ex-wife and Michael Diamond, a popular TV psychic, Julie unearths
bizarre secrets about her family that lead her to an underground society of
scientific misfits. The book's final sentence is guaranteed to unnerve readers
and leave them wanting more."
