Wytovich is an American poet, novelist, and essayist. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her Bram Stoker Award-winning poetry collection, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brothel<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, earned a home with Raw Dog Screaming Press alongside <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hysteria: A Collection of Madness, Mourning Jewelry, An Exorcism of Angels<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and her newest collection, also nominated for the Stoker Award, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sheet Music to My Acoustic Nightmare<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The primary horror in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sheet Music to My Acoustic Nightmare<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> comes from the situations the speaker places herself in. The poems read like Confessionalist works, but with a much darker, gory bent, almost like a cross between Anne Sexton and Chuck Palahniuk. Take, for example, these lines from her poem \u201cAfter We Sleep It Off\u201d:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After we sleep it off,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">maybe we can learn how to love each other again and<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">remember the night we went to the basement of your old house,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">threw beer bottles against the cinder block walls and laid down in the glass<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">letting it cut into our backs so we could be each other\u2019s scars.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Or these lines from \u201cRequiem for a Love Lost and a Love Gained\u201d:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m choking on the wine in my throat<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as I count the cigarette burns on my arms,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">each infected circle a reminder of a night<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I didn\u2019t kill myself over the loss of my future,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">now stolen away for a second time <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wytovich clearly treads into dark territory with her lyric poems. These works are raw, exposing all their viscera for readers. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, Wytovich also works with clear horror tropes. Whereas in some poems, the horror is a metaphor for social or psychological issues, there are many in which the bodies are really bodies, dismembered and broken. Take, for example, these lines from \u201cQuit the Night, Lick the Morning\u201d:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blackened by the soot of early morning weeping,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">she eased out her eyes from their sockets<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">placed them in her mouth<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tonguing at corneas,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">licking her irises<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are poems with dead bodies in trunks, decapitated corpses, even children disfiguring themselves. The unnerving, the bloody, the gruesome &#8212; they\u2019re all present in this collection, and Wytovich masterfully captures all these moments in her poems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overall, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sheet Music to My Acoustic Nightmare <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a really powerful collection of poems. The horror is both metaphorical and, in the masterful hands of Wytovich, real and visceral.
