Taff<\/a><br \/>\nGrey Matter Press (July 9, 2019)<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>$3.99 e-book<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Reviewed by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SadieHartmann\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sadie &#8220;Mother Horror&#8221; Hartmann<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I think it\u2019s a fact that human beings are obsessed with stories about our own cataclysmic demise. There\u2019s something about this potential threat to the end of the world as we know it that inspires writers to pen epic sagas exploring humanity under extreme duress. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Off the top of my head, I have enjoyed apocalyptic books like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Stand<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Stephen King, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swan Song<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Robert McCammon, and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Passage<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Justin Cronin.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One thing all those books have in common is their size. They are books of great girth. If I\u2019m honest, they all get off to a slow start as well. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Fearing: Fire &amp; Rain,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by John F. D. Taff, is also an apocalyptic tale, but after recently finishing it, I\u2019m excited to report that this one stands alone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First of all, this is Book One; the rest of the story is being meted out in three more books through\u00a0Grey Matter Press. Because of this strategic format, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fire &amp; Rain<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a slick size and just under 100 pages of reading. Translation: I devoured it and now I\u2019m hungry&#8212;no, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">starving&#8212;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taff does not waste time on a slow moving preamble. He jumps right in with what he does best: establishing characters the reader cares about. I love this so much about Taff\u2019s work. It is exactly why they call this man the King of Pain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Without characters for the reader to invest in, there is no threat. There\u2019s no imminent danger. The subject material could be the most frightening scenario a writer can imagine, but if there is nobody to unleash it on, why would a reader feel scared? Or feel anything at all?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m an emotional reader. I\u2019m going into every book with the hope to fall in love and then be destroyed over what\u2019s going to happen to my people. My fictional friends. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And this is where Taff is a damn genius. He proves time and time again that in just a few pages, in just one scene, he can manipulate the feelings of his readers and make us care about these people on the page like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">THAT<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> *snaps fingers*.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He does this effortlessly. This is why I said that in 100 pages of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Fearing<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, I am already more invested than I ever was with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Stand<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swan Song<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Those books took their time&#8212;Taff jumps right in and grabs you. Draws you in. By the time you finish <em>Fire &amp; Rain<\/em>, you\u2019re already committed to this. You <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">need<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to know what\u2019s going to happen. All the stakes are raised. All your feelings are sewn into the destinies of these characters and already, you\u2019re hoping for these people to make it. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I need Book Two like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yesterday<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It\u2019s this reader\u2019s recommendation that you get involved in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Fearing<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with everyone else because this thing is going to be a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ride <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the King of Pain is going to kill us!<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Fearing, Book One: Fire &amp; Rain\u00a0by John F.D.
