Wytovich attempts to tap into the emotions of survivors with her poetry, creating a cast of characters who explore their fears and pain; however, while there are some really inventive ideas and clever survivor stories in this collection, the majority of the poems ultimately fall short due to craft issues.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, the poem \u201cDead People Down Here\u201d features a great character. The speaker of the poem is issuing a warning for the ambiguous \u201cDown Here,\u201d a place where survivors have come to settle, but most likely die. One can easily imagine a person like this in a post-apocalyptic waste, someone prophesying the true nature of the world and what really happens to survivors.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is your last warning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019ve tried to help you, to let you know that<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">empty stomachs are more dangerous than<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">whatever is screaming outside in the dark,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that desperate parents will do anything<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to feed their child, to provide warmth<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">regardless of what the blanket is made of.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you keep walking, it\u2019s your own fault.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a fairly typical example of Wytovich\u2019s poetry. It\u2019s establishing a situation and scenario in a post-apocalypse, but it\u2019s not really offering anything poetic. The hallmarks of poetry&#8212;<\/span>rich imagery, creative metaphors, lyrical rhythms, etc.&#8212;are all missing from these poems. One gets situations and characters, but not poetry, to the point that this book almost reads like a series of short monologues rather than poems.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To be fair, there are some occasions where Wytovich shows skill as a poet. For example, \u201cA Collection of Pomegranate Seeds\u201d begins<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #686868; font-size: 19px; font-style: italic;\">An assortment of bones rests in my front yard<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color: #686868; font-size: 19px; font-style: italic;\">I can\u2019t remember the last time I watered the flowers,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color: #686868; font-size: 19px; font-style: italic;\">they wilted, starved in a vase on the kitchen table,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color: #686868; font-size: 19px; font-style: italic;\">their colors drained in pools of pink and white<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color: #686868; font-size: 19px; font-style: italic;\">on the linoleum floor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here we\u2019re offered, at least for four lines, an underlying rhythm to propel the poem forward. We\u2019re also provided with clear visual imagery that can anchor the reader in the poem. The lines are a bit cluttered, certainly, but there\u2019s enough here for a reader to grasp onto. This tends not to be the case for the majority of Wytovich\u2019s poems in this collection, however.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overall, if readers come to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Apocalyptic Mannequin<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> looking for poetry, they\u2019re going to be more disappointed than not. There are a few pieces in this collection that stand out as poems, but not many.
