He is also a reporter for the local Enterprise newspapers. His poems for children and adults have appeared in journals and anthologies worldwide, including the <em>National Geographic Books of Animal and Nature Poetry<\/em>, <em>Calliope<\/em>, and <em>Cape Cod Poetry Review<\/em>. He visits schools and libraries throughout New England working with students and teachers in reading and writing verse. He is a graduate of Roger Williams University and Emerson College. His newest collection is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Bedlam Philharmonic and Other Poems<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What stands out about <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Bedlam Philharmonic and Other Poems<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the intricate craft of the poems. Withrow clearly understands how to put a poem together, and the language of his rhymes and lines is pure aural pleasure. Take, for example, the opening stanza of his poem \u201cThis Borrowed Thing\u201d:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #686868; font-size: 19px; font-style: italic;\">When Henley saw her mother\u2019s wedding dress,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She said, flat out, \u201cI\u2019d rather wear a bag.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her maid of honor, Jill, whose suggestion it was<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To revive Hen\u2019s late mom\u2019s boxed-up gown, regretted<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recommending it. But her friend had fretted<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For weeks in bridal shops, forlorn because<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perfection added thousands to the tag<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And Hen had debts, her father\u2019s life a mess<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clearly, the end rhymes are there, and work naturally. They are not forced, nor are the lines padded with extraneous language to force the meter. Everything flows naturally and smoothly. What Withrow excels at, though, are his sonic symphonies. The assonance of this stanza, as with many of his poems, is rich and hypnotizing. Add to that subtle hints of consonance (\u201cREgretted, REcommending, fRIEND, fRETted, etc.) which are clearly there and elegantly done, but don\u2019t stand out as blatant or obvious, and these poems are masterfully put together.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, what seems to be lacking in this collection of horror poetry is, unfortunately, the horror. While Withrow\u2019s poems are gorgeous to hear, they lack the content to propel them forward. Many of these lyric or narrative poems simply don\u2019t end with anything resonant enough to scare, or even haunt, the reader. Withrow\u2019s intentions seem to be focused on those open-ended, unknown horrors. This could be likened to Weird Fiction or Weird Poetry, but the horrors here are alluded to. They are vague, and unknown, and so ephemeral as to be almost nonexistent. Take, for example, the lyric poem, \u201cTerzanelle for the Devils Tour Bus.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At a highway rest stop north of Providence,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My wife and I, up all night driving, slept<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Slumped in our seats until the radiance\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of sunrise woke me, and I quickly swept<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sludge of slumber from my mouth and eyes.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Glancing over to see that Meg still slept,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I stretched my arms and legs. To my surprise,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A dozen yards ahead a bus was parked\u2014<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Again, I rubbed the slumber from my eyes;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It looked to me the whole of it was marked<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With painted pagan symbols, bright as flame\u2014<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A dozen yards ahead a bus was parked,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blazoned with pictographs. There was a name<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Across the blackened windows: Lord of Tours.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those painted pagan symbols, bright as flame\u2014\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Goat-men, serpents\u2014leapt from yawning doors.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With Meg sleeping there north of Providence,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our Wrangler\u2019s windshield cracked, the Lord of Tours<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Revealed to me his hellish radiance.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The last stanza, particularly the last line, seems to want to invoke a resonant moment. Obviously a mood-based poem, this lyric wants to invoke something deeper, something haunting and scary, that keeps the speaker awake. But the images simply aren\u2019t strong enough to carry that idea forward, and the reader is left wanting. While it\u2019s not a weak poem, certainly, it\u2019s not a scary or horrific poem, and readers expecting horror poetry will be disappointed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overall, Steven Withrow\u2019s book <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Bedlam Philharmonic and Other Poems<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is not a horrible collection, but it\u2019s not brilliant, either. Withrow clearly can craft a sonically lush poem, but they\u2019re just not scary or horrific enough to be truly haunting.
