She has multiple chapbooks and full-length collections published. She has also been the recipient of two Individual Artist Awards in Poetry from the Maryland State Arts Council. Her upcoming collection, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Where the Wolf<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, was the winner of the Diode Editions Book Prize.\u00a0<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Where the Wolf<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> takes classic horror and dark fantasy imagery, including fairy tale imagery, and creates a narrative about a young girl becoming a woman becoming a mother, and how she uses the werewolf or fairy tale wolf imagery to convey that change and the protection she needed while going through those changes. She uses the wolf image as a metaphor for adaption, change, and even survival:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I say <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wolf<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">but I mean <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gown<br \/>\n<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of changed night:\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">forecast of bones falling<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from the rooks\u2019 tongues,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the weight of a hundred skies inside.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In tapping into this imagery, she takes a classic monster or villain from the tales and reinvents it as an icon of womanhood. This is something that Kindred is known for doing, taking known characters from fantasy or fairy tales and giving them new, unheard, voices to powerful effect, and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Where the Wolf<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is no exception. That being said, Kindred also acknowledges the danger and seduction in the wolf characters from these tales:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And what if a wolf is telling<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this story, Her mouth wide<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not to bite but hold it<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">out to you on a rug of snow? And it is safe<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to lie down just now: you\u2019ve both<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">walked so far.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kindred does not shy away from becoming the wolf in these poems, but also doesn\u2019t sugarcoat that transformation, either, which makes for a richer and more nuanced collection of poetry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kindred also intersperses less fantastic poems from her own biography amongst these other poems. This only serves to enhance the collection because readers see a modern speaker engaging with themselves and their personal histories. For example, the poem \u201cLetter to My Nineteen Seventies\u201d begins:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dear Nixon, dear apron, dear child\u2019s candied tongue:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">there\u2019s been a wrinkle. You left the sprinkler on.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The curling iron plugged in.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the table, no note\u2013you\u2019d remember it\u2013<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dear ones, my groovy dead,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it never said: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">forgive me.<\/span><\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is little, if any, fantasy or myth or horror in this poem, but that helps increase the strength of the other poems in the collection. By tapping into personal memory in this and other poems, by moving away from the mythic and metaphorical into the all-too-painful reality, Kindred is able to build a more honest, intimate connection with the reader, so that they know when they&#8217;re reading other poems that are more fantastic, those emotions are just as palpable and real for the speakers. This helps eliminate the potential distance between the reader and the speakers in the poems and forces readers to fully experience the emotional impact of all the poems in this collection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sally Rosen Kindred has created another magnificent collection with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Where the Wolf<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It\u2019s post-modern in its approach to poetry, horror, and myth, and really works to create new narratives from ancient stories. Horror and dark fantasy fans will love the dark imagery that Kindred taps into from various fairy tales and legends, and the poetry is so rich and well-crafted that readers will be swept away by these speakers and their stories.
