Gray is a writer of things mostly strange.\u00a0 His newest collection of poetry is <em>Tears on the Glass Desert<\/em>, which is a post-apocalyptic nightmare that will certainly capture the attention of horror poetry readers.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The chapbook begins with a violent apocalypse. Poems like \u201cMushroom State\u201d and \u201cBurning on Re-entry\u201d let us know that this is a man-made nuclear decimation of the earth. The repeating image of the Glass Desert seems to imply that the heat from the blasts has melted and refused the bulk of the earth into a shiny nightmare for survivors. The section ends with survivor tales.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>the remnants of humanity boil away<br \/>\nlike tears on the glass desert,<\/p>\n<p>we survive,<br \/>\nand they call us<br \/>\nlucky.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This is an ominous start to a very brutal collection, and one that establishes the world well.<\/p>\n<p>The second section, \u201cChildren of Fallout,\u201d is a series of tales concerning post-apocalyptic life. Humanity has fractured, and various tribes and clans have risen up to try and survive.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Saints oozing sermons that preached<\/p>\n<p>of New Order and a better tomorrow,<br \/>\nbut the tides of these bindings<br \/>\nwere just as easily broken.<\/p>\n<p>And the clans that formed thereafter were the darker seeds<br \/>\nsewn from The Fall of Devil&#8217;s Fruit,<br \/>\nsplit into their given factions.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This section really examines how humanity reacts to overwhelming threats and horror. It\u2019s a very anxiety-rich section, and readers will be emotionally tugged into dark places of their psyche by these poems.<\/p>\n<p>The final section, \u201cFaces in Decay,\u201d is a raw look at the end of humanity. Survivors are dying off and what\u2019s left is barely human enough to be worth mentioning.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>There are no more faces roaming<br \/>\nin these hills of carnal wreckage,<br \/>\na desolate horizon of carved murder<br \/>\nand ash silhouettes, of strangulation<br \/>\nand tears of splintered glass.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The book ends with one last vision of the glass wasteland that Gray has created.<\/p>\n<p><em>Tears on the Glass Desert<\/em> is a really dark look at the end of humanity. It\u2019s a cautionary tale about man\u2019s need for power and domination and what those will lead to if we aren\u2019t cautious. It\u2019s also a really graphic look at the apocalypse and post-apocalyptic society. And while dystopias are one of the major buzz genres of speculative literature, Gray doesn\u2019t even try to pretend there\u2019s anything but chaos when humanity is forced to survive.<\/p>\n<p>This is a brutal collection of horror poetry and the overarching narrative in the book makes for a quick but potent read that horror enthusiasts will enjoy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tears on the Glass Desert: Speculative Poetry of Holocaust, Fallout, and Decay by Wesley D.
