Clark is the author of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Collective Gravities<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Under My Tongue<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your Strange Fortune<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Science of Unvanishing Objects<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Her forthcoming books include <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every Song a Vengeance <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My Prayer is a Dagger, Yours is the Moon<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. She is a founding co-EIC of literary journal <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cotton Xenomorph<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Her favorite basketball player will always be Rasheed Wallace and her favorite escape artist can only be Houdini. Her newest collection, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Escaping the Body<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is a tour de force exploring the physical body and the liminal spaces between one\u2019s soul and one\u2019s skin and bones.\u00a0<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the outset, Clark\u2019s poems read like a woman\u2019s musings on childhood and young adulthood. For example, a poem like \u201cIt\u2019s the Horror of My Friends That We Say Mean Things About Blondes\u201d implies some coming to terms with childhood rivalries and whatnot. However, that\u2019s how Clark lures unsuspecting readers closer and then ensnares them with her lines:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">when people say our names,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">we don\u2019t always answer<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">because giving in to a name<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is being devoured by it,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">we like it best when you<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">scream it<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">make our names sound like<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sacrifice, like falling through black<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">holes and being pulled apart<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">without knowing it<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poems like this take a simple story and expand it, making it seem mythic and terrifying. This is Clark\u2019s power as a poet, twisting the commonplace and ordinary into something dark and haunting for the reader.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clark is also able to start with a horror trope and just run with it until the reader has nightmares. A poem like \u201cThe Undue Acidity in Your Veins\u201d begins with a nightmare scenario and just builds from there:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The doctor tells us that I need<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to learn how to cut into<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">my own skin.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf she can\u2019t do it now, she<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">won\u2019t be able to do it when<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">she has to.\u201d He says to you<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not to me.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This idea, that a young woman would need to learn how to cut herself and scar her body on demand, while an apt metaphor for how society treats women, is very terrifying. However, Clark\u2019s poem doesn\u2019t stop there, and stanza after stanza, things get worse for the heroine in the poem while the reader is forced to watch in horror.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Escaping the Body<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a phenomenal book of poetry. While not every poem in the collection is a horror poem in the truest sense, the overall collection is a dark vision which haunts the reader well after the covers have closed. Chloe N. Clark is able to take things that seem innocent and twist them into fantastic torments for her readers. Anyone who is a fan of horror poetry or poetry in general will count themselves lucky to have partaken of this tome.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Escaping the Body by Chloe N.
