She is the author of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What Flies Want<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, winner of the Iowa Prize; <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">House of Sugar, House of Stone<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; and the chapbooks <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Backyard Migration Route<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Made and Unmade<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. She lives in Denver, Colorado. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What Flies Want<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, her newest collection, is a dark collection of poems that deals with very real traumas &#8212; mental health, marriage difficulties, self-harm, etc. &#8212; and their very real consequences.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What P\u00e9rez does well is create poems that have this lingering sense of dread that permeates through them. There\u2019s nothing overtly scary or gory in these poems, but there is a mood created of ominous fear that works on a primal level. For example, her poem \u201cI Want These Problems to Stay Quiet Problems\u201d begins:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">let no light alight upon this larva<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or visit this virus newly named. don\u2019t tap<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the glass before this adder, attempt to tame<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this tempest in an Erlenmeyer flask.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These lines are sonically rich and fun to read out loud, but while they seem light and almost sing-song on the surface, a closer reading reveals something very large and scary and threatening about to happen. P\u00e9rez never states what it is, exactly, in the poem, and that almost makes it worse for the reader.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elsewhere, P\u00e9rez taps into some mythic images to create the horror of the experiences of her subjects. For example, \u201cOnce I Learned to Be a Girl\u201d begins:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once upon a time there was a little box,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a wooden vessel filled with tiny wants.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once upon a time the box was buried,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the map and key tucked high upon a shelf.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And when her hands were free she cut<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and colored, drew straight lines and crafted<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This poem explores, with mythic and folkloric imagery from childhood stories, the pains of growing older and becoming more aware of the very real horror in the world. This approach is subtle with its horror, but like her other poems, the scary things are just at the edges waiting to grab the unsuspecting reader and leave them awake at night after reading.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What Flies Want<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a solid collection of poetry. While it isn\u2019t overtly horror (no zombies or werewolves or vampires, oh my\u2026) it is a very strong collection of scary poetry. The monsters in this book are real, and Emily P\u00e9rez masterfully draws the reader\u2019s attention to them and makes the reader afraid of them, which is a profound talent.
