Her first book, <em>To Build a Home<\/em>, won silver in the Readers\u2019 Favorite International Book Awards. She spends her time journaling, exploring, and living out her days with the love of her life &#8212; her dog, Felix. Her newest collection, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pangaea: Prose and Poetry<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> explores the horrors and traumas inflicted on one\u2019s body in a striking and poignant collection.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A lot of the horror in Mian\u2019s poetry is metaphorical, and the vehicles of the poems work to explore how memory and trauma affect the body with very visceral images. For example, the second poem in the book \u201cWelcome to My Body: A War Memorial\u201d contains lines like:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here, under the flesh<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of my heart, a man\u2019s<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">corpse has settled,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">decaying until it is<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one with my body\u2019s system.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">i am still learning how<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to give a killer<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a proper burial.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lines like these explore trauma through a lens of horror, and use horror tropes to create a really striking tone for the reader.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elsewhere, Mian uses these vehicles to make sociopolitical statements that deal with how one\u2019s body can be colonized. For example, lines like<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I know I\u2019m American, because death is an old friend you see at the grocery stores,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the movies, church\u2014a familiar haunting we have learned to live with.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as an American, death has become<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as patriotic as the blood-red flags<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that we are taught to respect more than<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">human bodies.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here, death is personified and a very real character in everyday life. Mian taps into some universal horrors and fears in her poems to make her political points as direct and strong for readers, leaving them haunted by the specters she faces daily.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pangaea: Prose and Poetry<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a really strong collection of poetry and short prose. These are terrifying poems that tap into some universal horrors to haunt the readers. Elsewhere, Mian uses various horror tropes to discuss the traumas that plague her body.
