While the word \u201chorror\u201d might not be initially associated with Shakespeare, a quick read through his plays shows many horrific incidents. Aquilone spoke to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cemetery Dance<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on turning The Bard\u2019s work into a horror anthology, how it will take on Shakespeare\u2019s plays and sonnets, and what stories are already lined up.\u00a0<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>(Interview conducted by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.danicadavidson.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Danica Davidson)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><b>CEMETERY DANCE: Why did you decide to have <\/b><b><i>Shakespeare Unleashed<\/i><\/b><b> be the follow-up <\/b><b><i>to Classic Monsters Unleashed<\/i><\/b><b>?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">JAMES AQUILONE: The idea behind the Unleashed series is to do new takes &#8212; whether that&#8217;s a reimagination or a subversion of the original &#8212; on stories from different literary &#8220;universes.&#8221; With <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Classic Monsters Unleashed<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, obviously we delved into the classic monster universe, which wasn&#8217;t much of a leap for a horror anthology. With the next book, I wanted to play in a sandbox not known for its horror elements but that would naturally lend itself to horror &#8212; and Shakespeare really fits that bill. The Bard&#8217;s plays are full of blood and ghosts and witches and dark magic. And if the play doesn&#8217;t feature those elements, we added them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What sorts of Shakespearean stories will it have?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joe Lansdale and\u00a0Kasey Lansdale are writing a story inspired by\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Macbeth,\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cullen Bunn is taking on\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hamlet<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Jonathan Maberry is doing\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Tempest<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0, Seanan McGuire chose\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Midsummer Night&#8217;s Dream<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Lisa Morton has\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Titus Andronicus\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lee Murray<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is basing hers on<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0The Winter&#8217;s Tale<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Some of the stories are horror sequels to the plays, while others are complete reimaginations, even some set in modern times. We&#8217;ll also have dark sonnets written by the likes of\u00a0Linda D. Addison,\u00a0Alessandro Manzetti,\u00a0Jessica McHugh,\u00a0Sara Tantlinger,\u00a0Stephanie M. Wytovich, and\u00a0Lucy Snyder.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>How did you find the talent for it?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of the contributors came from my previous anthologies,\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Classic Monsters Unleashed\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kolchak: The Night Stalker<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0graphic novel. Others had Shakespearean experience like Ian Doescher, who&#8217;s written a bunch of Shakespeare mashups like\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shakespeare Star Wars<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shakespeare Avengers<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so he was a perfect\u00a0fit and I&#8217;m so excited to see what he does.\u00a0We&#8217;ll have a\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nam12.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fmonstrousbooks.com%2Fsubmissions&amp;data=05%7C01%7C%7C18504f4d04f24da9e56508da4fd8eebd%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C637910090525354311%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=cD7t5ESbpblY4jlIieEXT8%2BpYGa5g5rcnDCJrOc1oRY%3D&amp;reserved=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">submission period<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0that opens to everyone right after the Kickstarter. We&#8217;re looking for short stories as well as sonnets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Do you plan to release more books in this series?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certainly. I have a few ideas for future anthologies, but I haven&#8217;t decided yet. I also hope to publish novels and comic books in the series through my newly launched publishing company, Monstrous Books.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Do you have a favorite Shakespeare play?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hamlet<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. That was the first Shakespearean play I read, and I fell in love with it. I remember getting the book on a Friday in high school. We were meant to read it over the entire semester, along with\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brave New World<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and I finished both books by Sunday night. Then I had to slog through\u00a0the entire term as we read a couple of pages out loud in class every day. I eventually started sneaking in books like\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Catch-22<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0and would read that during class.
