His poetry collection <em>Life and Other Unfortunate Horrors<\/em> is available from Madness Heart Press, and his short story collection <em>Viva La Muerte!<\/em> is available from Nightmare Press. His second poetry collection <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Where the Worm Never Dies<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is forthcoming from Swann and Bedlam Press.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hernandez\u2019s poetry is clearly informed by his fiction practices. The poems read like a prose sentence parsed into lines, which is a form of poetry many contemporary authors choose to pursue. As such, the poems read more like short stories with clear narratives. For example, \u201cThe Power of Grief\u201d begins:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The old man\u2019s grief<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">made him desperate<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">especially when his prayers<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fell on deaf ears<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">turning to an ancient tome<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">far older than Christ himself<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from it, he learned a ritual<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and read its forgotten words<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and smiled as he witnessed<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">death himself materialize<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">contained in a simple ring of salt<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a typical sample of Hernandez\u2019s style, straight forward narrative with little embellishment or poetic flourish, and the standard for the collection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hernandez does not only stick to narrative free verse, however. He also dabbles throughout this collection in rhymed and metered verse as well. For example, \u201cJustice\u201d is a series of limericks which begins:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There was a man named Fester<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who once was a child molester<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he gave love a whirl<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with a twelve-year-old girl<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who happened to be the daughter of his Aunt Esther<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rest assured that Fester gets his comeuppance in this poem, as per the title. This shows Hernandez\u2019s approaches to formal verse and his level of skill with rhyme and meter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hernandez presents these tales with little flourish or poetic folderol, so readers are presented with a raw and stripped-down tale. For the\u00a0 most part, Hernandez sticks to free verse, but does occasionally attempt rhymed and metered poetry.
