Johnson, and Alea Celeste Williams<\/a><br \/>\nIndependently Published (October 2024)<br \/>\nReviewed by Joshua Gage<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thunderstruck<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> describes itself as \u201cA witchy, pagan, erotic, just right for Halloween poetry collection by critically acclaimed authors, artists and poets.\u201d This is a very appropriate description as the bulk of the poems are witchy and pagan in origin.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Take, for example, the poem \u201cThe Queen,\u201d cowritten by Sandy DeLuca and Alex S. Johnson.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Specters slip through veil of death&#8211;<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sky dotted with night-birds<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">crying beneath moon&#8217;s yellow glow.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ghouls and goblins dance<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in swirls of oak-scented smoke&#8211;<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dead leaves burn on ancient graves.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Queen of autumn rises&#8211;<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mortal children scurry by&#8211;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is the sort of folk horror poetry that readers can expect from this collection, poems that are contemporary, but also echo darker and more haunted histories. The authors are tapping into ancient mythic and pagan imagery throughout these pages, and the book is steeped with this particular brand of darkness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elsewhere, the poems dip into the more sensual, as in \u201cSurreal City\u201d by Alea Celeste Williams. The opening lines establish a physically romantic awakening highlighted with soft nature images:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With warm strokes,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">making a clear course along a cool coast<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sun rises, making its impact here<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shining, making us alive<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Animals open their eyes&#8230;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poems like this may not be horror or dark, perse, but they do serve to create a consistent voice throughout the collection so that, when the darker and more horrific poems occur they stand out even more so.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is difficult to collaborate in poetry in general, so the fact that three poets have come together to create a collection of individual and group work.<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Thunderstruck: A Dark Poetry Collection<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows the dedication and tenacity that Sandy DeLuca, Alex S. Johnson, and Alea Celeste Williams for their particular style of dark poetry.
