She is the co-owner of the horror fiction subscription company <a href=\"https:\/\/nightworms.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Night Worms<\/a> and has been the editor-in-chief of her own horror fiction imprint, Dark Hart Books. Hartmann is a 2023 Bram Stoker Awards Winner for her book <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bookshop.org\/p\/books\/101-horror-books-to-read-before-you-re-murdered-sadie-hartmann\/a7a2662dea90d9f5?ean=9781645677802&amp;next=t\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">101 Horror Books to Read Before You\u2019re Murdered<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from Page Street Publishing. Her most recent book is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feral and Hysterical: Mother Horror\u2019s Ultimate Reading Guide to Dark and Disturbing Fiction by Women<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, also from Page Street Publishing.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feral and Hysterical<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a fully illustrated reader\u2019s guide to horror, dark fantasy, folklore, and gothic literature by women. The cover itself, by Rosie Stewart is eye-grabbing and brilliantly invites readers into the book\u2019s pages. With a foreword by horror author Ania Ahlborn and introduction by the editor herself, the audience becomes informed with why this book is necessary and how this innovative idea came into fruition. Hartmann also includes a readers\u2019 advisory, in which she states \u201cCurating a good reading list is its own magical alchemy and reminds me of making mixtapes for my friends.\u201d She also warns \u201cMy method of recommending books prioritizes the reader\u2019s interest above my own personal experience.\u201d It is disclosures like this that makes <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feral and Hysterical<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> feel like it\u2019s curated for each individual reader.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feral and Hysterical<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> includes short essays from Alexis Henderson, Christina Henry, Alma Katsu, Laura Purcell, and Rae Wilde. These essays encompass \u201cDamsels and Demons,\u201d \u201cHistory and Horror\u201d and \u201cOn Feminist Fiction,\u201d and are an important accompaniment to Hartmann\u2019s lists. The essays not only provide external knowledge and perspectives by other women authors, but seamlessly stitch together these recommended reading lists. Henderson\u2019s essay, \u201cOn Feminist Fiction,\u201d asks and answers the challenging question \u201cCan a book be considered feminist if its central character doesn\u2019t uphold feminist ideas?\u201d and follows the reading list \u201cWhat Women Say About Femicide in Latin America Through Horror Fiction.\u201d These pairings are both complimentary of one another and essential to understand the depth and breadth of Hartmann\u2019s vision.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hartmann\u2019s masterlist is broken down into numerous short categories, including: \u201cNot Your Dad\u2019s Westerns,\u201d \u201cWomen of Splatterpunk,\u201d \u201cExposing Historical Erasure,\u201d \u201cG\u00f3tico Familia,\u201d and \u201cPsychic Trauma.\u201d These sub-lists contain a dynamic dissection of each subgenre and \u201cbook vibrations,\u201d which gives readers a hashtag-like section of short genre descriptors, as well as the book suggestions for that category. Most sections also have beautifully haunting illustrations by Mar\u00eda Amaya that will speak to readers as though they are tarot cards. Each recommendation is accompanied by the book\u2019s cover, publication information, a gripping summary, and Hartmann\u2019s intricate thoughts on each book. Some books on Harmann\u2019s lists include: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Woman in Black<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Susan Hill, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kindred<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Octavia Butler, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Yellow Wallpaper<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Manhunt<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Gretchen Felker-Martin, and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Salt Grows Heavy<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Cassandra Khaw. There is also a list of recommendations for \u201cModern Middle Grade Horror by Women Authors,\u201d written by middle grade horror author Ally Russell, as well as \u201cYA Horror from Women Authors,\u201d curated by YA novelist Kelsea Yu. Other small reading lists include: \u201c50 States, 50 Books by Women,\u201d and \u201cThe Mothers of the Gothic and the Macabre,\u201d compiled by Hartmann herself. Closing out this fantastic guide is a clever book checklist with a full list of recommendations and a checkbox where readers are able to mark off Hartmann\u2019s suggestions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feral and Hysterical<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a much-needed contemporary guide filled with favorite classics, up-and-coming authors, and underground publishers who deserve more attention. Hartmann tips her hat to famous authors like Shirley Jackson and Anne Rice, as well as fresh voices in the genre, such as Elliott Gish and Trang Thanh Tran. Although this book focuses on women horror authors, it is not marketed solely to women or femme-presenting people. From short story collection reading lists to Amazon Original Series recommendations, and books from 1794 to 2025, there is surely a new story and subgenre for everyone to love.
