The first section, in which the titular poem is located, is dedicated to Schweitzer\u2019s tradtional horror and Weird verses. In the second section, readers are introduced to Schweitzer\u2019s more mythic and historical poems. The third section is dedicated to poems that most readers would identify as science fiction, delving into all the wide and varied subgenres of that term. The last section is a selection of poems from Schweitzer\u2019s previous collections. At over one hundred and fifty pages, this collection displays the depth and breadth of Schweitzer\u2019s talents and poetic subjects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Schweitzer\u2019s main mode of poetry is clausal free verse. This is used throughout all the sections, from poems like \u201cThe Ghosts of Troy\u201d to \u201cLook Beyond.\u201d It\u2019s a serviceable enough style of poetry, and while it doesn\u2019t lead to many rhythmic pleasures, it is cozy enough for most readers to settle into while reading. For example, \u201cGlastonbury, 1995\u201d begins:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course it was beautiful,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">almost beyond words,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Tor by moonlight,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the ruined tower at the summit<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">like a giant\u2019s index finger<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thrust into the velvet sky.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, I felt the magic then.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is no lyrical underpinning here nor do the line breaks evoke any urgency in the reading; these lines are meant to be subtle and follow the rhythms of speech in a way that coaxes the reader into their content.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That being said, this is not Schweitzer\u2019s only mode. He often displays his attempts at more formal verse, as in poems like \u201cThe Howling House\u201d and \u201cTwo Knights.\u201d For readers who are more partial to these types of poems, Schweitzer does not disappoint. Take, for example, the poem \u201cDreads,\u201d which begins:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What if our wizards are long-winded frauds,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and poor Tom\u2019s just left a\u2019cold,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and what if our specters are shadows and wind,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and half-garbled memories grown old?<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a fun, rich ballad with rich imagery sure to please any reader of formal poetry.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No matter what type of poetry readers enjoy, Darrell Schweitzer\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dancing Before Azathoth <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will have something for them. Whether it\u2019s horror poems about werewolves, historical fantasy about WWII fairies, or a mad scientist\u2019s lab assistant\u2019s musings, Schweitzer has readers covered.
