It is a brutal and gritty survival story that does not hold back in the slightest.

What I love about what Najberg has done with the story is that, for the majority of its page count, the characters and the reader are not entirely sure what exactly has happened or what the threat is for the sisters we follow. This lends a constant sense of mystery and urgency throughout the novel, keeping the pages turning quickly.

As the book opens, we follow Elissa, a 13-year-old girl who has survived a horrific, major apocalyptic event, as she scavenges for food and supplies in what is left of her neighborhood. While it is unclear what the specific threat is that she faces, it is clear from the onset that she needs to be extremely careful not to be seen, as evidenced by the cooked human bones she finds next to the grill in the back of the house she is breaking into. This opening sequence, involving Elissa having to hide from… something, is extremely suspenseful and is a perfect setup for the remainder of the story.

Elissa is accompanied in this terrifying world by her younger sister, Tabby, and Bramble, a poodle the siblings found and rescued. Oh, and Elissa has a taxidermized ferret named Pom Pom that she carries around with her that might actually talk to her, as well. What follows is a nightmarish journey of survival, where the supernatural and natural are both out to get them.

The book follows a back and forth structure in time. Starting in the present after this unnamed apocalyptic event, then going back to the day that the girls’ parents forced them down into a shelter they didn’t know existed in their basement, leaving them alone and without explanation.

It is really in the relationship between Elissa and Tabby that the book finds its greatest strength. The bond they share and the lengths they will go to to defend and protect one another is inspiring, and will have readers invested and rooting for them the entire way. There are a ton of really disturbing and horrifying set pieces, and the gore levels are high enough to satisfy the most rabid horror fans, but there are also really beautiful, quiet moments, as well, where Elissa tells Tabby fables to help her calm down and go to sleep that will resonate just as much as the blood and guts.

The novel crescendoes into almost cosmic horror levels, and while I don’t want to spoil anything, I can’t imagine very many people are going to guess all of the ins and outs of this apocalypse. Najberg has created a nightmarish world in this novel, and while I would never, ever want to actually find myself in it, I was completely enthralled by it as a reader.

Should You Read It?

If you like your horror apocalyptic, mean, and gritty, this one’s for you, absolutely.

(Check your trigger warnings, this one involves both children and animals).

Eat The Light by Andrew Najberg Wicked House Press (April 2026) Reviewed by Adam Allen I’m a sucker for a good post-apocalyptic horror story, whether it’s zombies, aliens, or some kind of disease, and Andrew Najberg’s Eat the Light will absolutely scratch that itch for readers.
