Tyler Jones\u2019 Arson by Design<\/i> is a collection obsessed with destruction. Not simply physical destruction, but emotional self-immolation. Again and again, these stories return to people who knowingly step toward ruin and strike the match themselves even while understanding the cost. Whether through grief, obsession, guilt, ambition, or desperation, Jones fills these pages with characters who participate in their own undoing. The result is a stellar collection of horror that feels deeply intimate beneath its sometimes supernatural surface. We aren\u2019t only facing monsters. We are facing the human instinct to burn our lives down in search of meaning or absolution. In some cases, even seeking escape.<\/span><\/p>\n

The thematic through line gives <\/span>Arson by Design<\/span><\/i> remarkable cohesion despite the wide variety of stories and tones present throughout the collection. Jones moves comfortably between cosmic horror, ghost stories, cryptid lore, psychological, and melancholic fiction. Yet, every story feels connected by its fascination with self-destruction. His characters are not passive victims stumbling through the darkness. More often than not, they open the door willingly. Sometimes for love, sometimes out of curiosity. And, sometimes, because living with the pain they carry already feels unbearable enough to justify the risks.<\/span><\/p>\n

Arson by Design<\/span><\/i> opens with \u201cCarved In Salt,\u201d a chapbook previously published as a standalone by Rapture Publishing. It is a story smoldering with grief and emotional exhaustion, immediately establishing the atmosphere that defines much of this tale. Jones operates in the space where horror works best when the emotional wound exists before the supernatural elements reveal themselves. That terror grows naturally from vulnerability already living within the characters.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Loss hangs over much of the collection like a thick smoke, warping our vision and judgment. It pushes our characters toward danger that simply cannot be seen through the thick air. It creates the sensation that they are not merely haunted by external forces but also by their own inability to let go. That emotional realism is one of Jones\u2019 greatest strengths throughout <\/span>Arson by Design<\/span><\/i>. Even stories built around high-concept premises remain believable. A father attempting to prove the existence of an afterlife through increasingly disturbing means feels horrifying not because of its outrageousness, but because we are tapped into something recognizable underneath. That desperate refusal to accept mortality. The deep need to know and the unbridled willingness to sacrifice everything for some closure. The horror emerges from watching someone cross moral boundaries while they convince themselves their intentions justify the damage. And, as readers, we have to ask ourselves, would we do the same?<\/span><\/p>\n

Several stories in <\/span>Arson by <\/span><\/i>Design explore the idea of self-inflicted destruction driven by obsession. In one story, the cryptid hunters dissecting supposed evidence of the unknown are not just chasing monsters. They are chasing validation and meaning in lives that otherwise feel empty. Then, in another entry, the search for the Ark of the Covenant similarly becomes mainly about consuming the nature of belief itself rather than discovery. Jones expertly explores what happens when people devote themselves fully to an idea that begins to hollow them out from within. The \u201carson\u201d in these stories often starts with devotion that transforms into annihilation.<\/span><\/p>\n

Another of this collection’s strongest achievements is its command of atmosphere. Jones excels at creating settings that feel ever so slightly wrong, those places where reality appears thin at its edges. \u201cThe House of the Horse\u201d is a standout in this regard. The story possesses an uncanny, almost dreamlike, cinematic quality that recalls the discomfort of a half-remembered nightmare. The imagery of a horse haunting a house sounds absurd, but in Jones\u2019 hands it transforms into something genuinely unnerving, with remarkable control and tonal precision. We never get over explanations, allowing the bizarre visions to fester in our minds. It is horror tended with a skilled hand, disorienting and implying instead of creating a spectacle.<\/span><\/p>\n

What ultimately elevates <\/span>Arson by Design<\/span><\/i> and makes it that much more memorable is the way it understands horror as a transformation through wreckage, a baptism through flames. To burn something down is to expose what remains under it all. Jones\u2019 characters repeatedly strip themselves bare, chasing truths and discovering how much damage this pursuit can leave behind. Yet the collection avoids nihilism. Even at its bleakest moments, there remains a fascination with enduring and surviving after the flames die out.<\/span><\/p>\n

In that sense, the title becomes damn perfect. <\/span>Arson by Design<\/span><\/i> is not chaos without intention. These tales are about deliberately facing ruin. People are the architects of their own emotional collapses because some part of them believes this destruction may finally bring some form of certainty. Jones captures that impulse with the glinting sharpness of a razor, crafting an exceptional collection that is frightening because it illuminates how often human beings are the source of their own immolation.
