Horror, as a fiction genre, is having a moment (e.g., <\/span>Obsession<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>Backrooms<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>Sinners<\/span><\/i>). So it\u2019s only fitting that one of the 21st century\u2019s greatest storytellers would finally take his pound of flesh and rise with this wave of fictional blood. Stephen Graham Jones has been steadily putting out his particular brand of fiction for a quarter century now. Many of us this summer were, though unsurprised, thrilled to watch him accept the Bram Stoker Award for Best Novel, Locus Award for Best Horror Novel, and Nebula Award for Best Novel for his masterpiece, <\/span>The Buffalo Hunter Hunter<\/span><\/i><\/a>. Give the man his flowers, we said, all while knowing he\u2019d keep feeding us, and well. Our next meal? <\/span>Off the Reservation<\/span><\/i><\/a>, his upcoming novel from Saga Press\u2014and surprise follow-up to 2020 fan-favorite <\/span>The Only Good Indians<\/span><\/i>\u2014in stores everywhere October 13, 2026.<\/span><\/p>\n

But the true magic of Stephen Graham Jones\u2019 oeuvre is in its staggering depths. When Saga gave him the spotlight he deserved in 2020, many readers had no idea just how stacked his backlist was\u2014or that he even <\/span>had <\/span><\/i>a backlist. I was feverishly collecting everything I could find at the time, but more of his books had gone out-of-print than seemed possible. Every day, it seemed, I\u2019d stumble on a new title I\u2019d never heard of but <\/span>needed<\/span><\/i>. What was a fan to do?<\/span><\/p>\n

We\u2019re in luck! Before the recent news that Saga itself will be re-issuing some of his out-of-print titles next year, Off-Road Media came to our rescue in 2024\u201325 and re-packaged a whopping 12 of his vanished books for new readers.<\/span><\/p>\n

But this is where I must pause. Invite you to take a big breath. No need to feel overwhelmed. Cemetery Dance has blessed me with the opportunity to review\u2014ahem, <\/span>recommend<\/span><\/i>\u2014across a six-column series, all 22 Stephen Graham Jones books currently in-print, culminating in the launching of his newest, <\/span>Off the Reservation<\/span><\/i>. For ease of immersion, I have thematically grouped his books a handful at a time.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Stephen Graham Jones Starter Pack<\/b><\/p>\n

New to SGJ? Or perhaps you\u2019ve read one or two of his greatest hits, but you\u2019re not sure where to go for more? Take my hand and enter with me into the dark forest of what I\u2019m calling the SGJ Starter Pack. These are my picks for ease of entry, to get a sense of what to expect from his fiction before submerging into the murky waters.<\/span><\/p>\n

Avid readers will agree that there are several other great options for your first SGJ experience, and I\u2019ll do my best to note this as we trek deeper and deeper into this column series. The short answer is there\u2019s no \u201cbad\u201d place to start. So what I settled on for the purposes of this column are three (four, really) of his books that, to me, aren\u2019t as steep of a learning curve, and, more importantly, do a good job collectively of capturing the essence of his writing style, his favorite themes, and his story toolbox. The price of admission is, in my opinion, relatively low, but the reward can be (again, imo) just as great as any of his heavier hitters.<\/span><\/p>\n

To start, we turn to a lean, mean novella, meant to be read in one sitting<\/span><\/p>\n

NIGHT OF THE MANNEQUINS<\/i><\/strong><\/a>

The what: <\/span>Night o<\/span><\/i>f the Mannequins <\/span><\/i>begins with what was supposed to be a harmless prank among friends, but Sawyer and the others are soon running for their lives when a mannequin comes to life hungry for blood. Sawyer isn\u2019t sure how much longer he can keep this friend group together\u2014and alive. Here we see Jones\u2019 love for the genre, and we see his most popular setting of small-town Texas, where your trip to the local movie theater is more often than not dusted with caliche and slick with oil fields. Don\u2019t look away from this one\u2014Jones likes to twist the knife.<\/span><\/p>\n

The why: Jones has truly earned his reputation as the king of slashers (more on that later), and it\u2019s the sheer fact of his staggering expertise that makes it a special treat when he experiments. You may think that\u2019s a bold place for me to suggest you start, but nay I say: you are in trusted hands here. Jones draws from his love of the horror films of his youth and adds in that teenage angst, the horror of growing up, of your friends moving on. Watch him subvert the slasher and instead spin you a web of a tale, tangled with the kind of love that cuts both ways. As an introduction to Jones\u2019 unique style, <\/span>Mannequins <\/span><\/i>gives you a taste of his energetic prose and, more importantly, the way he teases everything apart, pares it down to its core components, rebuilds it, sets it loose. I\u2019ve always thought Jones an engineer with a word processor, and here is a perfect tale to watch the man at work.<\/span><\/p>\n

Finished but hungry for more? How about a double feature\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

KILLER ON THE ROAD <\/i>\/ THE BABYSITTER LIVES<\/i><\/strong><\/a>
\nPublished 2025 by Saga Press as a Saga Double\"\"<\/strong><\/p>\n

Killer on the Road <\/span><\/i>sees runaway teen, Harper, on a road trip with her friends and little sister, who won\u2019t let her hitchhike herself into a dangerous situation. But too late: Harper has already been marked by a persistent killer, and now no one\u2019s safe. The relentless game of cat and mouse that ensues is a high-octane, batshit gore fest, threaded with humor and the kind of emotion that\u2019s worn on the sleeve. Jones slams the pedal to the floor and locks his knee, so hold on tight.<\/span><\/p>\n

But when you\u2019re done? Flip the book around. The second film in tonight\u2019s showing starts now.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Babysitter Lives <\/span><\/i>started as an audiobook exclusive, but damn am I glad Saga took it to print. In it we follow babysitter Charlotte and her six-year-old twin charges on the night before Halloween. She just wants to put the kiddos to bed so she can study for the SATs, but the house has other plans for her. A giant rubber lizard come to life, secret tunnels that shouldn\u2019t be possible, a malevolent jack-in-the-box, and so much more unfold in this puzzle box of a haunted house novel. The very fabric of reality unravels in this one, and let me just say that it is a goddamn delight how often it surprises.<\/span><\/p>\n

This two-for-one book is an easy pick for my \u201cSGJ Starter Pack\u201d recs, for obvious reasons. You get a more comprehensive run of Jones\u2019 favorite pressure points, with small-town life and slasher tropes and American Indian characters and \u201cHow does he think of this stuff?\u201d ideas. But we also have two perfect examples of a narrative device with which Jones absolutely thrives: chaos. These characters are multitasking like it\u2019s an Olympic sport, and Jones delights in throwing grenades from all directions. Another strength of his that shines here (particularly in <\/span>Babysitter<\/span><\/i>) is something we\u2019ll come across several times, and that is his devious talent of making over-popular tropes like the haunted house (or werewolves, or vampires, or or or) feel totally original and never before done.<\/span><\/p>\n

And now, to end this first in my series, we\u2019ve come to a personal favorite\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

I WAS A TEENAGE SLASHER<\/i><\/strong><\/a>
\nPublished 2024 by Saga Press\"\"<\/strong><\/p>\n

I Was a Teenage Slasher <\/span><\/i>is a fascinating, perhaps underrated, SGJ title. Coming on the heels of his celebrated Indian Lake Trilogy (more on that slasher opus later), and in fact written in an attempt to inspire him to write <\/span>The Angel of Indian Lake<\/span><\/i> (again: later!), I often feel that this novel is overlooked. But it is easily one of my favorites, the perfect osmosis of so much that I love about Jones\u2019 fiction, so it was an easy pick for this Starter Pack. Let\u2019s get into it\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

As can be guessed from that \u201950s pulp throwback of a title, Tolly Driver is undergoing a frightening change. Not into a werewolf, not a Frankenstein, but into a Jasonian, Krueger-esque killer. A slasher. With only his best friend, Amber, to guide him through the genre tropes that have somehow escaped the drive-in screen and into his reality, Tolly must escape this inescapable transformation before he leaves a trail of bodies through 1989 Lamesa, Texas.<\/span><\/p>\n

This book is, in my estimation, the apotheosis of everything cool about a Stephen Graham Jones story. This is Jones\u2019 slasher brain fully unleashed; at the time of writing, he\u2019s nearly completed his Jade Daniels slasher masterpiece, but he needs to exorcise himself of all the slasher ideas still making him reach for the blade. And damn are these ideas cool: a slasher whose chosen weapon is a rusty oilfield drillbit, slashers being a disease that can be caught like a vampire bite, a slasher mask made of overlapping cinched belts, and so much more that I won\u2019t spoil here. Jones brings that engineer\u2019s eye in full force, and, writing about the kind of Texas town and \u201980s lifestyle with an authentic, steel-trap memory that rivals King himself, he stirs the perfect blend of his love of horror, genuinely funny humor, and, sometimes on the very next page, emotional catharsis that turns your laughter to sobs.<\/span><\/p>\n

I Was a Teenage Slasher <\/span><\/i>is my pick for the single greatest mix of all of Stephen Graham Jones\u2019 varied strengths, seamlessly blended to make just a damn good read.<\/span><\/p>\n
