ROAD TO STEPHEN GRAHAM JONES\u2019\u00a0OFF THE RESERVATION:\u00a0<\/em>An Obsessive\u2019s Fiction Review Column\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Short stories are a form of magic. Perhaps <\/span>dark <\/span><\/i>magic, if we\u2019re talking about horror short fiction here, though of course with SGJ we\u2019re never talking about just one genre. For me, horror short fiction has always been that siren song, luring me out into the deep. It started with \u201cThe Tell-Tale Heart,\u201d was re-ignited by Joyce Carol Oates\u2019 1966 story \u201cWhere Are You Going, Where Have You Been?,\u201d and became truly ravenous when young Spencer discovered the cosmic tales of H.P. Lovecraft and the stacks of books collecting the short fiction of Stephen King.<\/span><\/p>\n

For Stephen Graham Jones, you could say his siren song was, of all things, the author bio of late modern writer Stephen Dixon. <\/span>As the legend goes<\/span><\/a>, some 30 years ago, near the beginning of his career, SGJ would seek out that author bio at the end of a Stephen Dixon short story to stare at one particular magic number: \u201c[Dixon] has some 300 stories published.\u201d Jones would dream of having that many of his own stories out there. And though I may not have an exact count for you, I would bet that all these years later, he does. And then some. And, SGJ being the dictionary entry for \u201cprolific,\u201d he did it in half the time.<\/span><\/p>\n

We\u2019ve covered three novels and a novella in <\/span>The SGJ Starter Pack<\/span><\/a>; we\u2019ve covered his trilogy of novels in <\/span>Slasher 101 with Professor Jones<\/span><\/a>\u2026 but today\u2019s column, finally, is my recommendation of four SGJ books that collect about 120 short stories, all recently re-issued by Open Road Media in paperback editions.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Short Fiction of Stephen Graham Jones<\/b><\/p>\n

THE ONES WHO GOT AWAY: STORIES<\/i><\/a><\/strong><\/span>

This is, without question, one of my favorite short story collections I have ever read, up there with <\/span>20th Century Ghosts <\/span><\/i>(Joe Hill, 2005), <\/span>Growing Things and Other Stories <\/span><\/i>(Paul Tremblay, 2019), and <\/span>Unfortunate Elements of My Anatomy <\/span><\/i>(Hailey Piper, 2021). Days after finishing it, I still felt as if I were walking through a dream, and it was those stories that were real life. As humans, our brains seek out patterns to be able to make sense of our reality, but these stories reject that\u2014or, worse, they recognize it as an entry point into our deepest fears and insecurities and hopes. So many facets of our real lives cannot and never will be easily explained, and so we turn to stories and entertainment for the illusion of control and understanding, knowing (hoping) that by \u201cThe End,\u201d it will all <\/span>make sense<\/span><\/i>. Jones\u2019 characters learn a different truth, however\u2014that life rarely comes in a neat little package, but rather it comes at you as a pack of wolves, as phantoms and ghosts, as a puzzle missing crucial pieces.<\/span><\/p>\n

From what I\u2019ve seen, the most talked-about story here is its opener, \u201cFather, Son, Holy Rabbit\u201d; but where the magic of this collection really seeps into your frontal lobe is a run of three stories in the second half: \u201cTeeth,\u201d \u201cRaphael,\u201d and \u201cThe Meat Tree.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The first of the three follows a detective on the chase who maybe gets a little <\/span>too <\/span><\/i>much inside the serial killer\u2019s mind. Jones states that he wrote \u201cTeeth\u201d to see if he had what it takes to write a full <\/span>Se7en<\/span><\/i>-esque novel. (The answer: a resounding \u201cyes\u201d\u2026 but more on that in our next column). The third (after a clever take on \u201cThe Hook\u201d), \u201cThe Meat Tree,\u201d took the detective angle away but kept the disturbing, spine-chilling \u201cWhat the fuck did I just read?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The middle story, to me, is perhaps the most important story Jones has written. \u201cRaphael,\u201d on first read, may \u201cjust\u201d be a beautiful, haunting tale about three friends who accidentally unlock a frightening magic that changes their lives forever. But, friends, it is so much more than that. As I read through the slasher trilogy of our last column, I came to realize that the Melanie of \u201cRaphael\u201d haunted Jones for <\/span>years<\/span><\/i>\u2026 until he could finally fully explore her terrifying story in the background of <\/span>My Heart Is a Chainsaw<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>Don\u2019t Fear the Reaper<\/span><\/i>, and <\/span>The Angel of Indian Lake<\/span><\/i>. But I fear I\u2019ve said too much. Go find out for yourself.<\/span><\/p>\n

ZOMBIE SHARKS WITH METAL TEETH: STORIES<\/i><\/a><\/strong><\/span>

Like his other Lazy Fascist books, <\/span>Zombie Sharks with Metal Teeth <\/span><\/i>is, in short, SGJ\u2019s excuse to just go full balls-to-the-wall and get weird with it. The transgression, the new weird, the comedic, the splatterpunk, the absurd.<\/span><\/p>\n

To be honest, I\u2019m having trouble summing up the whole of this book\u2019s parts, except to say something like \u201cIt\u2019s batshit, you\u2019ll love it.\u201d I can\u2019t imagine this book making sense with any other title than the one it got. There\u2019s mad scientists, there\u2019s space lobsters, there\u2019s slashers (duh), there\u2019s the titular zombie sharks, and, oddly enough, there\u2019s the opening flash fiction story about a man and his dog which somehow stuck with me more than any of the actual \u201cbatshit\u201d story ideas to be found in the rest of the book.<\/span><\/p>\n

STATES OF GRACE: STORIES<\/i><\/a><\/strong><\/span>

\"\"As weird as <\/span>Zombie Sharks <\/span><\/i>may sound, believe it or not, <\/span>States of Grace <\/span><\/i>might just be the strangest book I recommend in this entire column series. I say that, of course, as the highest form of flattery. It\u2019s weird, it\u2019s lyrical, it\u2019s poignant, it\u2019s absurdly hilarious, and a million other things besides. These little stories pack in so much that I chose to read them with my partner (and editor), because I felt I may need a brain that has an MA in English just to suss out these stories\u2019 full meaning. Flash fiction is SGJ\u2019s favorite mode of storytelling; indeed, across these nearly 70 stories, you truly get the sense that he\u2019s just walking around in his day-to-day scratching out flash stories on any writable surface he can lay his hands on, like he can\u2019t get the words out fast enough.<\/span><\/p>\n

A few favorites that stood out to me: \u201cBulletproof,\u201d a beautiful tale of a family\u2019s cycle of violence finally coming to an end; \u201cWhen I\u2019m Alone I Count Myself,\u201d which plays on one of SGJ\u2019s biggest, most singular tools in his writing, what I\u2019ll call \u201cmagical thinking\u201d\u2014we all do some form of this in real life, counting down to a stoplight turning green, not stepping on sidewalk cracks, etc., but I\u2019ve rarely seen it employed in fiction to the level that Jones uses it; \u201cAnimals I\u2019ve Known\u201d\u2014if you\u2019ve listened to any of the SGJ episodes of <\/span>The Kingcast<\/span><\/i>, you know he\u2019s got some wild stories about animals; and \u201cThe Family That Reads Together,\u201d a poignant fairytale about a father\u2019s relationship with his children, who just want his love and attention.<\/span><\/p>\n

Finally, \u201cWhy I Write\u201d: it may be \u201cflash,\u201d but it ain\u2019t \u201cfiction\u201d; still, it\u2019s beautiful, and anyone who has grown any kind of appreciation for Stephen Graham Jones, his stories, or the act of writing in general, will want to read this and read it and read it until you can recite your favorite lines. Mine? I\u2019ll save that for my sign-off below.<\/span><\/p>\n

AFTER THE PEOPLE LIGHTS HAVE GONE OFF: STORIES<\/i><\/a><\/strong><\/span>

In my experience among SGJ fans, <\/span>After the People Lights Have Gone Off <\/span><\/i>stands as the favorite of all his collections. And w<\/span>hile mine is The Ones Who Got Away<\/i>, I do understand the sentiment. After the People Lights <\/i>reaches similar heights and is perhaps more accessible. Plus, that title is just so damn cool.<\/p>\n

One aspect of this collection that stands apart to me is how some of its stories exist in conversation with other authors\u2019 short fiction that must have resonated with Jones. \u201cXebico\u201d is a fun riff on the underrated 1926 classic \u201cThe Night Wire\u201d (a story I first read as curated by Patton Oswalt for his <\/span>Ghost Box <\/span><\/i>series) and the mysterious identity of its author. And then there\u2019s \u201cThe Spindly Man,\u201d a brilliant dissection of King\u2019s O. Henry Award winner, \u201cThe Man in the Black Suit.\u201d I especially love these because they felt like a chance to sit in Jones\u2019 classroom with his university students, a chance to see his academic side in full force.<\/span><\/p>\n

One last note: Though we\u2019re talking about the Open Road Media re-issues here, it\u2019s worth tracking down the original out-of-print edition of <\/span>After the People Lights<\/span><\/i>, for its gorgeous interior illustrations.<\/span><\/p>\n

Unfortunately, it seems the general reading population considers short story collections and anthologies to be a tall order. To me, they are where the real magic lies, but I understand that it\u2019s easier to sell a novel with one continuous narrative. So if you hesitate for any reason in picking these up, I figured I could give you a chance to test the waters with a little extracurricular reading. SGJ has several ebook-only stories, and even more online-only ones if you want to go hunting for treasure. There\u2019s \u201cAttack of the 50 Foot Indian\u201d (2020, Saga Press), and his Amazon Original Stories, but where I suggest you start is with his Tor.com Original stories. It\u2019s since been re-named to <\/span>Reactor<\/span><\/i> Magazine, but all six of those stories\u2014<\/span>\u201cChapter Six\u201d<\/span><\/a> (2014); <\/span>\u201cThe Night Cyclist\u201d<\/span><\/a> (2016); <\/span>\u201cWait for Night\u201d<\/span><\/a> (2020); <\/span>\u201cMen, Women, and Chainsaws\u201d<\/span><\/a> (2022); <\/span>\u201cParthenogenesis\u201d<\/span><\/a> (2024); <\/span>\u201cThe Belle of the Ball\u201d<\/span><\/a> (2025)\u2014are free to read on their website. My hope is that by the end of the first one, you\u2019ll understand that these collections are simply not to be missed.<\/span><\/p>\n
