In the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bookshop.org\/p\/books\/blood-slaves-markus-redmond\/64dc80456a255ed4?ean=9781496753175&amp;bkshp-astro=t\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blood Slaves<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> opening, Redmond describes wanting to write a \u201cbadass vampire book,\u201d which was what he was in the middle of writing in May 2020, right before George Floyd was murdered. And while Floyd\u2019s murder was tragic, Redmond reminds us that it was not a new or unique occurrence. This kind of violence, with little to no consequence, has been happening since slavery in colonial America.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feeling infuriated and powerless, Redmond returned to his vampire book, wishing he could be one, imagining how that kind of power could right so much wrong, unleash revenge, settle scores, and change culture, society, and history. That\u2019s when the author\u2019s vampire book became something more. That\u2019s when it became <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blood Slaves, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and much to this reader\u2019s delight, the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blood Saga.<\/span><\/i><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you haven\u2019t read <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blood Slaves<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, I can\u2019t recommend it enough. It\u2019s one of my top reads of the year alongside <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Burn Down Master\u2019s House <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by Clay Cane, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Nightmare <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by Kelly McWilliams, and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Curse of Hester Gardens <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by Tamika Thompson. If you like Cane\u2019s critically acclaimed book, Ryan Coogler\u2019s Oscar-winning film <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sinners<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or Stephen Graham Jones\u2019 Stoker award-winning novel,<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The Buffalo Hunter Hunter, Blood Slaves <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blood Rising<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are for you.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blood Rising<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> takes place immediately after the events of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blood Slaves, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">beginning with a recap from my favorite character in the saga, Gertie. This recap, and tight timeline, made it easy to step back into the world of the Ramangans, as though I\u2019d never left.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And true to Redmond\u2019s word, there\u2019s a shift from longing and fighting for freedom in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blood Slaves<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to sharing and abusing power in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blood Rising<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In the first book, readers might have felt at odds with Gertie, Willie\/Kwadzo\u2019s companion and moral compass, but now, the key tension lies in what to do with the power of the Ramangans, who it should be shared with, who it should be kept from, and how it can be used to uplift and mobilize the oppressed. Some simply wish to relish the power and all the delights of victory, while others, like Gertie, Irene, and Kwadzo, know there is still a lot of work to be done, and that a lot of their people are still in bondage and subjected to horrific cruelty at the hands of slave masters.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are other characters such as Irene, who really steps into the power of the Blood. Her character arc might be one of the best parts of the saga so far and her specific specialty expands the powers and knowledge of Ramangan lore, which makes the next installment in the Blood Saga all the more exciting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is still injustice here. There\u2019s injustice everywhere.
