There is something notably cruel about a haunted house story when the house is not the only thing the characters have to fear. Chris Panatier\u2019s (<\/span>Daytide, The Redemption of Morgan Bright<\/span><\/i>) Worry Box<\/em> shows us that the scariest monsters don\u2019t always break down the door. Sometimes they live inside your head. Sometimes they are the things you are afraid you might do. And, maybe, the place you call home is listening.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Martin family has every reason to be optimistic. Alison and Nathan have found a new home for their growing family, daughter Dru is settling in, and their foster daughter Lailah is finally approaching the adoption they all desperately want. The house in Tumbling Hills appears to offer exactly what they need, including a cozy attic where Lailah can escape when her intrusive thoughts threaten to overwhelm her.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Panatier\u2019s setup is deceptively straightforward because <\/span>Worry Box<\/span><\/i> is not out to throw the entire toolbox of haunted-house cliches at the reader. Instead, the horror festers and bubbles in the violent collision between something supernatural and painfully real. Lailah\u2019s intrusive thoughts are frightening precisely because they are unwanted. They are invasive possibilities that she fears say something about her true nature. As the strange events around the family escalate, that fear becomes impossible to separate from reality. That uncertainty is one reason the novel shines.<\/span><\/p>\n

Is Lailah losing control? Does the house have something to do with what is happening inside it? Panatier keeps those questions alive long enough to trap the reader in the same psychological space as the Martins. Every incident invites suspicion. Every explanation creates more questions. The result is a delicious, uneasy reading experience where even seemingly mundane moments carry the threat of something going horribly wrong.<\/span><\/p>\n

The house itself is a major reason this works. <\/span>Worry Box<\/span><\/i> takes the traditional haunted-house concept and shifts the perspective of what that concept can actually mean. The house is not just a creepy structure where ghosts happen to reside. It begins to feel like an active participant, an oppressive presence capable of turning the idea of home against the people who live in it. That distinction matters.<\/span><\/p>\n

A home is supposed to be the place where the outside world stops. It is where your guard comes down, where your children sleep, where you assume safety. Panatier weaponizes that expectation. The more comfortable the Martins become, the more unmooring it is when that comfort begins to erode. The house becomes an extension of the family\u2019s fears, and suddenly, there is nowhere to retreat.<\/span><\/p>\n

But the supernatural elements wouldn\u2019t land nearly as hard without the emotional foundation that supports them. Lailah\u2019s story gives the novel its beating heart. She is carrying the complex emotional baggage of being a foster child who craves permanence, while she deals with thoughts that frighten her and cause the people around her to question her. The closer she gets to becoming part of the family, the more terrifying it is for her to imagine losing that future.<\/span><\/p>\n

That is where <\/span>Worry Box<\/span><\/i> finds its nastiest horror. The question is not whether the house will hurt someone; it is whether the family can survive what fear makes them become. As the pressure mounts, the Martins begin to point fingers, take sides, and question one another. Love doesn\u2019t magically protect a family from paranoia. In fact, the people we love most are often the ones whose betrayal we fear most. Panatier exploits that vulnerability beautifully, allowing the supernatural threat to expose fractures that would have otherwise remained hidden.<\/span><\/p>\n

The novel’s pacing is expertly built. The twists arrive with enough regularity to keep the mystery alive, but Panatier never sacrifices character for the sake of a shock. There is a deliberate escalation, a steady tightening of the screws that make the eventual turns feel earned. The book repeatedly encourages you to settle on an explanation before pulling the rug out from under you again and again.<\/span><\/p>\n

For horror fans, <\/span>Worry Box<\/span><\/i> is a perfect reminder that the haunted house story isn\u2019t dead. It needs someone willing to rearrange the furniture. And Panatier does just that. What begins as a story about a family finding their dream home becomes something insanely uncomfortable. It is a tale about intrusive thoughts, the terror of not being able to trust yourself, the fragility of family, and the possibility that the safest place in your life might be trying to destroy you. The supernatural horror brought me in, but the humans at its core kept me. <\/span>Worry Box<\/span><\/i> is anxiety-inducing, unsettling when it counts, and emotionally sharp enough to make the scares burrow under your skin. It is the haunted house at its very best, with something important to say about what one carries inside and the silent struggles we all face. <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
