The stories themselves may differ in tone and subject, yet they share a commitment to unsettling readers and leaving pieces of them in their hearts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That \u201cpiece\u201d is not always a jump scare or a gruesome scene. A few of my personal favorites are \u201cRed Leather,\u201d \u201cI Think My Treehouse Is Haunted,\u201d \u201cThe Mummified Corpse of Reese Witherspoon,\u201d and \u201cDream of Me.\u201d There is a consistent atmosphere of craft behind the story variety. Fracassi is a master at building tension, making a character\u2019s fear feel immediate, and ending a tale in a way that leaves the reader thinking.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Traps and Specters <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a strong reminder of why short form fiction remains a vital part of the horror genre. In the hands of a writer with this much control and vision, fiction can be brief without feeling slight, and a collection can be diverse without feeling scattered. These tales are inventive, frightening, affecting, and downright mean. They may not all leave behind the same sort of mark, but they are a compelling case for enduring the power of the macabre.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are looking for a collection that can move from the unsettling to the outright horrifying without losing its emotional center, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Traps and Specters<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is well worth your time. Fracassi has assembled a dark and thoroughly engaging set of stories that proves there is still plenty of life, and terror, in the short story.
