What is one theme or “thread” you explored and found yourself returning to in this collection, even though the stories are incredibly dynamic?

PHILIP FRACASSI: As the title suggests, I liked the idea of creating an anthology that dealt with supernatural misfortunes. Tonally, this collection is a bit quirkier than my others and I think more playful. The goal was to make it somewhat whimsical and fun, albeit with a lot of good scares and dark situations.

Short fiction has a particular way of unsettling us because it can leave so much up for interpretation. When you write a story, how do you decide what we need to see and where you leave us when the story ends?

For me it comes down to never using ambiguity as an excuse, or a cop out because I, as the writer, don’t know what happens. Ambiguous endings should be purposeful and should serve the story, not detract from it or be an escape hatch for the author. Speaking more generally, as it pertains to description, for example, I’m more open to being ambiguous because the reader’s imagination is always more powerful — and often darker! — than anything I could conjure up. If I say someone is being attacked by a “tentacled monster with a mouthful of jagged teeth,” that’s more than enough to get your brain juices bubbling, and I just step to the side.

Traps and Specters brings together supernatural elements, body horror, and other more human forms of terror. Was there any particular story that surprised you in the way it developed, or one that pushed you into territory you weren’t planning to explore?

The one that comes to mind immediately is “The Mummified Corpse of Reese Witherspoon,” which being as a funny title I came up with one day and thought it could be a dark comedy of sorts, but evolved into a treatise on the critical reception of art, and how criticism can be perceived by both the artist and the one doing the critiquing. It’s a story I still think about a lot.

Horror itself often asks us to confront what we would rather avoid, whether it is grief, mortality, guilt, or fear of losing control. What is it about the genre that motivates you to keep writing, and does that change your relationship with your own personal fears?

I don’t really think of writing horror as confronting my own fears as much as I see it as a way to reflect on human trauma, which is a dark way to see the world, I suppose, but I think it comes down to perception and critical thinking. I mean, who can honestly look critically at society at large and not think: Man, this is some dark shit. So yeah, I ditched my rose-colored glasses long ago, and they’re sadly now lost to time, and since I’m already thinking about how terrible a lot of things are, I might as well have some fun with it, while also twisting some of that darkness into entertainment for others and, in some cases, maybe even bring a little light to the encroaching darkness. Ergo, writing horror is a cathartic way to express a lot of my frustrations and — yeah, okay — fears about our world, as well as the uncertain future of our little blue dot.

Traps and Specters includes a few stories previously only available from your Patreon, along with several new ones. As this collection makes its way into the world, what do you hope new readers discover about your work through these stories that they may not encounter in your novels?

For me, short stories are a lot more experimental and exploratory than my novels. Look, there’s a big difference between taking a swing at an idea when its only going to cost you a week, or in some cases a weekend, of writing time, versus the months it takes to write a novel. So with my stories, I really just want readers to see them as a bag of tricks, if you will. Or, put another way, an assortment of different jelly beans, each one with a mystery flavor, that may either put a smile on your face, or in some cases, make you grimace, or (god forbid!) spit out. And hey, if readers like some of the flavors, I’d like to hope they give the bigger jelly beans a try, you know, the ones you eat with a knife and fork. Thus ends my jelly bean metaphor!

We at Cemetery Dance personally love any jelly bean Philip hands us!

Traps and Specters: Stories is available now.

Philip Fracassi is the USA Today bestselling author of The Autumn Springs Retirement Home Massacre and a Bram Stoker Award and British Fantasy Award nominee.
