Cemetery Dance News and Production Updates!

Hi Folks!

We’re down to our last 25 copies of Cold Comforts by Peter Crowther, so if you want to preorder a copy at the retail price and avoid the “game” of eBay and the secondary market down the road, now is your last chance!

FemmeAs you know, Femme and Kinsmen by Bill Pronzini have both been critically acclaimed bestsellers, but we’re pleased to report our favorite review to date has arrived from Ed Gorman’s blog where he writes “Bill Pronzini’s novella Femme is one of the best written and most cleverly engineered private eye stories I’ve ever had the immense pleasure to read” and “Bill Pronzini has a special gift for portraying the ominous underbelly of America, the troubled and dangerous people who want to destroy our political system.” Read more on Ed Gorman’s blog!

In other news, Dueling Minds edited by Brian James Freeman, Homestead by James A. Moore, and Tyler’s Third Act by Mick Garris are rolling at the printer should be shipping around the end of March or early April. Dueling Minds already sold out last year, but there are still a few copies of Homestead and Tyler’s Third Act left available for reservation.

Tyler's Third ActFor our Stephen King collectors, please note that our sold out “Slipcased Collector’s Set” of Scribner’s new hardcover editions of The Talisman and Black House by Stephen King and Peter Straub will be ready to ship later next month when the slipcases are completed. Cold Comforts by Peter Crowther

Hi Folks!

We’re pleased to announce we’ll be publishing a signed Limited Edition hardcover of Cold Comforts by Peter Crowther, but copies are going fast, so don’t wait to place your order!

About the Book:
You know, you think you know someone and then . . . kablooey! Something comes walking along, right up to you, and then punches you in the nose. It’s like that with Peter Crowther.

Cold ComfortsAfter reading Peter’s previous collection for Cemetery Dance, the poignantly dark The Longest Single Note back in 1999, you’d think you have his measure — after all, it echoes the nostalgia and gore served up in Escardy Gap, his epic collaboration with James Lovegrove. But then he sideswipes you with the science fictional tales of Songs of Leaving and you think, ah, okay . . . got him now (particularly as you’ve read the Forever Twilight novellas)! But then comes The Spaces Between the Lines, as bleak a gathering of horror yarns as you’re ever likely to find (and if you don’t believe us, read ‘Bedfordshire’) . . . which neatly ties into his take on witches, By Wizard Oak.

So, at that point, you’re certain you have it. How could you not. It’s easy, right? He’s a soft-centered, spookmeister with an eye for wonder and the far reaches of space. Fine. But whooahhh hold on there! Along comes this baby . . . a bona fide set of crime and mystery stories, no less. And so, dear reader, it kind of looks like you know Jack. Cats figure strongly in this book (though Peter Crowther has never owned one) and private eyes (well, one anyways) . . . and there are no mean streets in England, though one or two of them can get a little grumpy. Unnatural death also figures strongly here, though Peter hasn’t killed anybody (not as far as we know). He hasn’t smuggled drugs either (as in ‘Boxing Day’), hasn’t shot craps with dice that can foretell the future (the Runyonesque ‘Tomorrow Eyes’), doesn’t play trumpet (though, like Cal Williston in ‘The Musician of Bremen, GA,’ he does love the Chet Baker and Gerry Mulligan version of ‘Moonlight in Vermont’), hasn’t tried to poison anyone (‘The Allotment’), and as far as he knows Sherlock Holmes and the good Doctor Watson never did make it to the genteel Yorkshire town of Harrogate (‘The Adventure of the Touch of God’).

Eighteen stories from the fertile and frisky mind of one of England’s most accomplished genre wordsmiths. And now we all know exactly what makes Peter tick. At least until next time.

A Recommendation for Valentine’s Day, Doctor Sleep Waiting Lists, and Doctor Sleep Desktop Patterns

Hi Folks!

If you’re looking for a last second Valentine for that horror fan in your life, we’d recommend a Cemetery Dance Gift Certificate, which is valid for almost everything we offer in our online store including books like the signed Limited Edition of Doctor Sleep! (It might even be nice for you to have your own Cemetery Dance Gift Certificate ready to go when we announce our next Stephen King signed edition, so you don’t have to hesitate at all before jumping right in and placing your order!)

In other news, all of our editions of Doctor Sleep by Stephen King sold out very quickly. The Lettered Edition sold out in 75 minutes, the Limited Edition sold out in 4.5 hours, and the Gift Edition sold out exactly one week after it was announced, which is the fastest a Stephen King Gift Edition has ever sold out for us. For those who missed out, you can now join the Waiting List for this book via the Doctor Sleep product page on our website. There is no fee for joining the waiting list because you are not actually reserving a copy of the book at this time — you are only letting us know you’d like to be notified if copies do become available. This is not a reservation or order.

Finally, we’ve produced some desktop images/patterns/backgrounds/wallpapers for Doctor Sleep that are free for you to download, use, and share. Click on the images below to visit the download page on our website:

Doctor Sleep by Stephen King
Slipcased Gift Edition 90% Sold Out!

Our Slipcased Gift Edition of Doctor Sleep by Stephen King is now 90% sold out just 72 hours after it was announced, so if you were thinking of waiting until closer to publication to place your order, there won’t be any copies left to order! We’ve never had a Gift Edition sell out this fast and we suspect this will mean big things on the collectors’ market for this title.

The print run cannot be increased and there will not be a second printing, so if you want to order a copy of this Gift Edition at the retail price instead of risking a higher price down the road, now is the time to place your order so you don’t miss out!

Femme and Kinsmen are Baker & Taylor Bestsellers!

Hi Folks!

Before we get to today’s news, we just wanted to thank everyone for their support this week. The Lettered Edition of Doctor Sleep by Stephen King sold out in 75 minutes, the Limited Edition sold out in 4.5 hours, and the Slipcased Gift Edition is now more than 80% sold out.

In other news, we’re pleased to announce our two “Nameless Detective” novellas by Bill Pronzini have both hit the Baker & Taylor Fiction/Mystery Bestseller List, with Femme landing at #4 and Kinsmen landing at #14. The first printings of both trade editions have now sold out, but we’re rushing a second printing. If you don’t want to wait to read these two fine books, we do still have a few copies of the Limited Editions left available, but they’re going fast! We are also now accepting preorders for the second printings of the trade editions.

Femme: An Original “Nameless Detective” Novella

by Bill Pronzini

Femme fatale. French for “deadly woman.”

FemmeYou hear the term a lot these days, usually in connection with noir fiction and film noir. But they’re not just products of literature or film, the folklore of nearly every culture. They exist in modern society, too. The genuine femme fatales you hear about now and then are every bit as evil as the fictional variety. Yet what sets them apart is that they’re the failures, the ones who for one reason or another got caught. For every one of those, there must be several times as many who get away with their destructive crimes…

In the thirty years the Nameless Detective has been a private investigator, he has never once had the misfortune to cross paths with this type of seductress… but in Femme he’ll meet Cory Beckett, a deadly woman who has brought some new angles to the species. New—and terrible.

Kinsmen: A “Nameless Detective” Novella

by Bill Pronzini

Allison Shay was traveling home from the University of Oregon with her new boyfriend, Rob Compton, when their car broke down near the tiny rural town of Creekside, California. Soon after, Allison and Rob went missing without a trace.

KinsmenWhatever happened, it felt like something bad to the Nameless Detective. Five days without a whisper of contact with the outside world. Long past the inconsiderate-kids stage; long past the silly and the harmless.

Kinsmen takes Bill Pronzini’s classic private investigator to California’s northeast backwoods, where an isolated community is determined to keep a deep, dark secret: why Allison Shay and Rob Compton really vanished.

The real question facing the Nameless Detective: are they still alive?

Important Postage Update

Hi Folks!

This past week, the USPS increased postage rates again and also changed several shipping services. For example, Parcel Post has a new name and is an “in-store only” purchase, requiring shippers to go to the actual Post Office to ship via this method.

Some postage rates, like shipping to Canada, are increasing considerably. We apologize for the inconvenience these increases may cause you. As most of our customers know, we have no control over what the USPS charges and these higher postage fees only hurt our business. As shipping costs go up, collectors have less money to spend on actual books — and in some cases, they decide not to order at all.

We’re acutely aware of how the USPS rates affect our customers, and we wish there was a better option. If you live in Europe, we highly recommend you check out the Cemetery Dance titles listed on the PS Publishing website in the UK. Peter Crowther has been a good friend of ours for many years and we’re happy to send our customers his way.

If you live outside the US and know of a bookseller who is familiar with small press collectible book publishing who might want to carry our books for their “local” customers, please feel free to send their information to Brian Freeman at [email protected] and he will get in touch with them.

Thanks, as always, for your continuing support!

Stephen King’s The Dark Tower: The Complete Concordance (Revised and Updated)

New Signed Limited Edition Announced Today!
Stephen King’s The Dark Tower: The Complete Concordance (Revised and Updated) by Robin Furth

FREE US SHIPPING FOR A LIMITED TIME!

“I found this overview of In-World, Mid-World, and End-World both entertaining and invaluable. So, I am convinced, will you.”
— Stephen King

Hi Folks!

We’re pleased to announce we’ll be publishing a signed Limited Edition hardcover of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower: The Complete Concordance (Revised and Updated) by Robin Furth later this year! The original volume has proven to be quite popular, and we think our collectors will be very pleased with our plans for this beautiful special edition.

Stephen King's The Dark Tower: The Complete Concordance (Revised and Updated)About the Book:

The Dark Tower series is the backbone of Stephen King’s legendary career. Eight books and more than three thousand pages make up this bestselling fantasy epic. This revised and updated concordance, incorporating the 2012 Dark Tower novel The Wind Through the Keyhole, is the definitive encyclopedic reference book that provides readers with everything they need to navigate their way through the series. With hundreds of characters, Mid-World geography, High Speech lexicon, and extensive cross-references, this comprehensive handbook is essential for any Dark Tower fan.

Free US ShippingFrom Stephen King’s Foreword:

“Her Concordance was never meant to be published; it was created solely as a writer’s tool. But, even with most of my mind preoccupied by the writing of my tale, I was aware of how good it was, how interesting and readable it was. I also became aware, as time passed and the actual publication of the final three volumes grew closer, of how valuable it might be to the Constant Reader…  In any case, it was Robin Furth who inventoried the goods I had on sale, and replaced all the dim overhead lights so I could see everything clearly and find my way from Housewares to Appliances without getting lost…or from Gilead to Calla Bryn Sturgis, if you prefer. That in no way makes her responsible for my errors—of which I’m sure there are many—but it is important that she receive credit for all the good work she has done on my behalf. I found this overview of In-World, Mid-World, and End-World both entertaining and invaluable. So, I am convinced, will you.”

Important Postage/Shipping Update (January 2013)

With the recent pricing and service changes at the USPS, they’ve not only raised postage prices, but their software isn’t always feeding the correct pricing information back into our system. If your order says “free shipping” and you live outside the United States, please complete your order and Mindy will be in touch about the shipping fees. Also, it seems that Media Mail has vanished from the system. We’re working on that, too. Sorry for any inconvenience!

World War Z: The Deluxe Special Edition
by Max Brooks

World War Z“The end was near.” — Voices from the Zombie War

The Zombie War came unthinkably close to eradicating humanity. Max Brooks, driven by the urgency of preserving the acid-etched first-hand experiences of the survivors from those apocalyptic years, traveled across the United States of America and throughout the world, from decimated cities that once teemed with upwards of thirty million souls to the most remote and inhospitable areas of the planet. He recorded the testimony of men, women, and sometimes children who came face-to-face with the living, or at least the undead, hell of that dreadful time. World War Z is the result. Never before have we had access to a document that so powerfully conveys the depth of fear and horror, and also the ineradicable spirit of resistance, that gripped human society through the plague years.

Free US ShippingRanging from the now infamous village of New Dachang in the United Federation of China, where the epidemiological trail began with the twelve-year-old Patient Zero, to the unnamed northern forests where untold numbers sought a terrible and temporary refuge in the cold, to the United States of Southern Africa, where the Redeker Plan provided hope for humanity at an unspeakable price, to the west-of-the-Rockies redoubt where the North American tide finally started to turn, this invaluable chronicle reflects the full scope and duration of the Zombie War.

Most of all, the book captures with haunting immediacy the human dimension of this epochal event. Facing the often raw and vivid nature of these personal accounts requires a degree of courage on the part of the reader, but the effort is invaluable because, as Mr. Brooks says in his introduction, “By excluding the human factor, aren’t we risking the kind of personal detachment from history that may, heaven forbid, lead us one day to repeat it? And in the end, isn’t the human factor the only true difference between us and the enemy we now refer to as ‘the living dead’?”

News from the Dead Zone #155

The official Stephen King Facebook page debuted today. Be sure to click on the banner when you get there to see a clever mosaic.

Once upon a time, not so terribly long ago, I pretended to be Scarecrow Joe as part of the promotion leading up to the hardcover release of Under the Dome. I wrote the kid’s blog entries and ran his twitter feed. Colin Ford (We Bought a Zoo) will play him in the CBS TV series that debuts on June 24th. That’s the first casting news to be announced. There’ll be a promotional ad for the series during the Super Bowl. Neal Baer serves as showrunner. DreamWorks’ Stacey Snider is executive producing with Spielberg, King, Baer, Brian K. Vaughan (who wrote the pilot), Justin Falvey and Darryl Frank. Here’s an interview with King and Vaughan about the adaptation. Filming starts in Wilmington, NC in February. The thirteenth and final episode will reveal a vital piece of information about the town’s situation, but will be open-ended, the hope being that the series will be renewed and there will be more adventures in Chester’s Mill.

The third season of Haven ended with a series of bangs last night as the final two episodes were aired. What a cliffhanger it was, too. We learned some new information (who’s the Colorado Kid’s father? Who’s in charge of the guard?) but now we have to wait months and months to find out what will become of Audrey and Nathan and company. Turning Duke into a teenager, albeit briefly, was a stroke of brilliance.

The signed, limited edition of The Shining from Subterranean Press will go on sale at approximately 12:00 PM, EST, on Wednesday, January 23. The artist for this edition is Gabriel Rodriguez (of the comic series Locke & Key).

There’s a three page interview with King in the January 11 issue of Entertainment Weekly about Doctor Sleep. “6 Books We Can’t Wait For — Stephen King on His Shining Sequel” I haven’t found it online yet, though.

PS Publishing is going to do two 30th anniversary editions of King’s books this year. Their plan is to get the books out as close to the original publication dates as possible: Christine (with an introduction by Michael Marshall Smith) in late April and Pet Sematary (with an introduction by Ramsey Campbell) in mid-November. The books will have wraparound covers, two-page endpapers back and front (each one different) and full color wraparound artwork on a special slipcase plus six interior b&w illustrations. The artists will be signing the tip sheets and they’re hoping to include King’s signature as a facsimile. Print run should be 300-400 numbered copies.

Part 1 of the two-part Sheemie’s Story is now out from Marvel, with the concluding section coming out in February. After that, another two-part series called Evil Ground launches in April. It’s described as a prequel to “The Little Sisters of Eluria.” Here’s the blurb: “While traveling through the Desatoya Mountains towards Eluria, Roland comes across a haunted camp. While there, he relives one of his past adventures, in which he and his ka-tet fought Farson’s forces, only to be trapped by supernatural enemies”

Sony Pictures announced recently that the Carrie remake has been pushed back from its March 15 release to October 18.

The Facebook page Blumhouse Productions has released two behind the scenes photos for the movie Mercy, based on King’s short story “Gramma.” Dylan McDermott joined the cast recently, along with Frances O’Connor, Chandler Riggs and Joel Courtney. Peter Cornwell is directing. See more here.

Cemetery Dance magazine Will Be CLOSING to Fiction Submissions Soon!

Due to the overwhelming flood of submissions we received, we’ll be closing Cemetery Dance magazine to submissions by the end of this month, January 2013. If you’ve already submitted something, you’ll hear back in the next two to three months if you haven’t already. Thanks to everyone who sent us so many well-written stories.

Here are the guidelines one last time:

Guidelines: We’re looking for well written horror, dark mystery, and suspense short stories up to 5,000 words. Originals, no reprints. We want tales that are powerful and emotional—creepy, chilling, disturbing, and moody. Suspense/mystery/crime tales with a horror element are always welcome. Both supernatural and psychological stories are fine.

Please note that in the past we have typically received 500+ monthly submissions for the very limited number of open slots in the magazine, so only the best stories will stand out. Please send your very best work!

Most common reasons for rejection: lack of power, lack of originality, slow pacing, poor writing, boring themes, all gore and no heart. Read the magazine, see what type of fiction we are publishing—please don’t submit with a blind eye!

Multiple Submissions? Please only send one story at a time.

Payment: Professional rates, minimum of five cents per word, plus two contributor copies. Payable within 30 days of publication. Up to 5,000 words; maximum payment of $250.

Response Time: Up to four months.

Submission Window: Open until we fill our 2013 slots.

How to submit? Please use our online form at Submittable.com

Thanks, as always, for your continuing support!
