Many horror fans love chapbooks, but they’re tough to get a hold of. Most have limited runs, are costly, or are so beautifully done that readers are reticent to open and damage them (as with Minnion’s run of these 21 novellas).

Keith Minnion, owner of White Noise Press and celebrated artist and author, has compiled all of the chapbooks into one massive collection.

What makes this book so impressive? Yes, the authors within are stellar. There’s not one dud in the bunch. The reader can choose from a wild range of styles and areas from Elizabeth Massie, Mary SanGiovanni, Allison Littlewood, Gary Braunbeck, Kealan Patrick Burke, Matt Warner, the late great James A Moore, and many others. The styles range from the absurdly cool, demented tale by Warner to the sheer beautiful prose of Massie and Littlewood with wonders of all types in between. Choosing a favorite here is akin to having dinner at an upscale buffet. Everything is good, but the variety will give discriminating readers a chance to enjoy their favorite styles and types of stories to dip into others they might not have sampled before. Yet when it’s bookended by stellar tales by SanGiovanni and Norman Prentiss, it’s not tough to find something here to smile about.

That’s just the words.

Minnion, who apart from being a talented author, is a legendary artist, becoming a staple in Cemetery Dance magazine and illustrating the Stephen King/Rich Chizmar Gwendy trilogy. His drawings for each story are worth the price of the book itself.

As for the format of the stories, novellas are the hottest thing in horror, as they’re easily digested and typically shed the frills and fat of a novel. Each entry is near perfect for what they are — which equates to twenty-one high quality, highly entertaining stories.

Check out the lineup. That alone is enough to take a read, but with cool story notes from the authors and illustrations, it’s a solid buy.

Highly recommended.
