Last Train from Perdition (Book 2 in the I Travel by Night series!)
by Robert McCammon

Last TrainIn I Travel by Night, master of horror Robert McCammon introduced the tortured and instantly unforgettable vampire adventurer Trevor Lawson—All Matters Handled—as he searched for his maker, LaRouge, in hope of becoming human once more. It wove a tale about the terrors of the Dark Society, featuring the gothic sensibilities of old New Orleans, and the unforgiving violence of the untamed frontier of 1886. Now McCammon returns to Lawson’s gripping journey and sends him West, in the chilling sequel novella Last Train from Perdition.

Ever on the hunt for LaRouge, Lawson still travels by night, but no longer alone. Crack-shot, whip-smart Ann has become his companion, on her own search for her vampire-taken father and sister. Lawson has been summoned from New Orleans and the Hotel Sanctuaire to Omaha by a wealthy man who needs his son retrieved from a band of outlaws. Lawson and Ann agree to take the case and travel to the town of Perdition where they find their prey–but things get complicated fast when a saloon shootout leaves an innocent girl badly injured.

On a night train from Perdition to Helena to find medical help, it soon becomes clear that Lawson and Ann’s enemies may also be looking to prey upon them. As they struggle against those forces of darkness with a trainload of their most unlikely allies yet, Lawson also wages battle with the darkness LaRouge left within him. This latest installment in Trevor Lawson’s battle for redemption finds bestselling McCammon at his thrilling best.

Top notch writing, enjoyable prose, a twisted and demented story… but I was a bit lost at times. Seems Good Girls is book 2 in the Motherless Children Trilogy, something the publisher failed to mention when promoting the book. Now that it’s for sale to the public, I see that it’s listed that way, but it’s also being touted as a stand-alone novel. I, personally, would have preferred reading Motherless Child first.

That being said, there is some wonderful story-telling going on here. From the opening line, there’s magic in the words…Continue Reading

New Reviews and A Video Clip!

Hi Folks!

Matthew Warner’s new story collection Dominoes in Time is receiving positive attention from reviewers, and he’s also shared a video clip of a recent reading/performance of a story from the book, “And That’s When the Bathroom Exploded,” which you can watch on YouTube right now.

Check out what reviewers are saying and then purchase a copy of the eBook at one of our retailer partners through the links below:

Dominoes in Time“Matthew Warner’s collection, Dominoes in Time, not only shows tremendous range and skill, it’s like the best of Stephen King: ordinary characters (albeit unique in their own way) demand our sympathy and interest while, at the same time, they find themselves in extraordinary circumstances. Warner’s imagination is vast, and these stories leap off the page, staying with the reader in mind and heart. A highly recommended group of tales by a virtuoso writer.”
— Lisa Mannetti, three-time nominee and winner of the Bram Stoker Award, author of Deathwatch and The Box Jumper

“Although he’s an accomplished novelist and has written screenplays he really shines as a short story writer… this is very much worth your time and money.”
— Jim Morazzini, Beneath the Underground

“18 pivotal experiences light up the landscape for a delightfully eclectic cast of characters in Warner’s new collection of short stories. … With no attempts to cater to the politically correct or even polite, the story’s gritty language is part of this author’s hallmark style.”
— Lisa Rochford, News Leader

Dominoes in Time is a fantastic collection, and proves that the author should be front and center in dark fiction.”
— Sheri White, The Horror Review

Dominoes in Time showcases Warner’s ability to pen authentic paranoia from many different angles and his blending of the macabre with some finely placed humor makes this collection sing. At times reminiscent of classic Twilight Zone episodes, Warner’s stories are engaging and more often than not will take you places you didn’t see coming.”
— Nick Cato, The Horror Fiction Review

“Each story in Dominoes in Time is a dark gem — cold, sharp, and filled with sinister wonder.”
— Tim Waggoner, author of The Way of All Flesh

I’ve been a huge fan of Lucy Snyder’s work for years. Her yarns are fun, gutsy and weird as all get out. While the Black Stars Burn, though, has caused me to realize how important it is in the pantheon of full out capital-L Literature.

“Mostly Monsters” makes this indisputably clear from the first page. On the surface, we have the destructive relationship between a father and his daughter and the damage it causes. A sharp, heartbreakingly personal tale of familial horror that kicked me right in the teeth. At the same time, it screams its manifesto to refuse to look away from the small terrors that shape us daily. The sense of causation here, the implications of what went wrong, where and what could be done to keep it from happening in the future are woven through every word without ever stopping the story itself or robbing it of emotional impact.Continue Reading

Rambo: First Blood II
by David Morrell

Signed Limited Edition With A Very Low Print Run!

Hi Folks!

We’re pleased to report we’ll be getting a few copies of the special signed Limited Edition hardcover of Rambo: First Blood Part II by David Morrell from Gauntlet Press and Borderlands Press, but given the impact the character of Rambo has had on literature and film, we don’t expect our copies to last long!

Rambo: First Blood II
by David Morrell

First Blood 2Publisher: Gauntlet Press in collaboration with Borderlands Press

About the Book:
Three years after David Morrell’s ground-breaking novel First Blood became an equally ground-breaking film, 1985’s Rambo (First Blood Part II) established Rambo as an international thriller icon, breaking box-office records and adding Rambo’s name to the Oxford English dictionary.

Morrell’s novelization for Rambo (First Blood Part II) made a difference also. When the film’s producers asked him to write a book based on the script, he initially declined. After all, he hadn’t been involved in the film’s development, and at the time, most novelizations needed to adhere so strictly to the script that they were almost a form of automatic writing.

But then the producers gave Morrell permission to write whatever he wanted, provided that the novelization had a recognizable relationship to the film. Freed to be inventive and to make Rambo closer to the character as Morrell had portrayed him in First Blood, Morrell prepared a novelization that broke all the rules: one-third Morrell, one-third shooting script, and one-third material from James Cameron’s unused script for the film. (Yes, that James Cameron, before Aliens and Terminator 2.)

Continuing to break the rules, Morrell’s novelization was one of the first books of its kind to appear on the New York Times bestseller list. But even more unusual, Morrell had killed Rambo at the end of First Blood. The first version of the film killed him as well and was altered only after a near riot at a test screening, so how was Morrell going to resurrect his character for the novelization?

Rambo (First Blood Part II) will soon be available in a signed collector’s edition from Gauntlet Press (in collaboration with Borderlands Press). As with the collector’s edition of First Blood, this 500-copy numbered edition comes with a wealth of extras that include:

* First time in hardback
* Morrell’s revision of the 1985 text
* Morrell’s lengthy introduction that explains the behind-the-scenes intrigue of the movie and the novelization
* Morrell’s lengthy essay, “Rambo and Me: the Story behind the Story,” that analyzes Rambo’s origins in the social unrest and violence of the late 1960s in the U.S.
* A lengthy 1985 article from the Los Angeles Times, “The Curious Evolution of John Rambo,” detailing the numerous film studios and the 26 scripts that were involved in the dramatic ten-year process of bringing Morrell’s character to the big screen

Admittedly, I’m a bit of a pessimist. I see an anthology series in its fifth incarnation and I fully expect it not to be as good as its predecessors. I’m overjoyed to say that is not the case with the SNAFU series from Cohesion Press. It’s hard to believe that a little over eighteen months ago the very first SNAFU anthology saw the light of day.

Here’s what I said about the first book…

My expectations were not that high for this anthology. Although I love horror in all its many forms, I’ve never been that big a fan of the military story. Well, I needn’t have worried at all. SNAFU: An Anthology of Military Horror delivers. Every story killed (pun intended).

Each book in the series has taken a slightly different approach to the military horror theme. This time it’s all about hunters, both the hunter and the hunted.Continue Reading

Binge Smarter: 4 Film Books Every Horror Fan Should Read (and Movies to Go With Them)

danseSo far this column has been about two things: horror fiction and horror film. And where they overlap. With various digressions where it has suited my mood.

But the name “Paper Cuts” is broad enough that it shouldn’t limit our book discussions purely to fiction titles. Right?

In that spirit, here are four nonfiction film books (some criticism, some history, some reference) that I think every horror film fan should read.Continue Reading

Being a doctor empowers you in ways civilians cannot imagine, and Terry has helped the rich and famous of Hollywood stay young and perfect for years past their prime. He thinks he’s seen everything, but he hasn’t seen someone like Brittany before.

I turned around in slow motion, reeling, and saw the repellent creature behind the counter staring at me. Even more repulsive, she was starting to smile. Her teeth were horrifically staggered.

“Maybe you should stay,” she said, happily.

I tried to shake my head, but it just jerked spastically. I tried to speak, but my tongue was thick and my lips couldn’t form the words. I just gulped and floundered like a goldfish dumped from its bowl onto the floor. And then this creature shambled out from behind the counter and crossed the room, her shadow growing as she grew closer until it devoured me. She turned off the lights, put the CLOSED sign in the window, lowered the curtains, and squatted down next to me.

“You’re pretty,” she told me…
